@cstross that point about the sports that kids get pushed into is pretty goddamn serious as well. I've played basketball my entire life until last year, I finally had to give it up, but I loved sports, still do. Basketball, baseball, a dozen others. Things I wouldn't let my kids do when they were young? Football, boxing -- I played football, I boxed 13 amateur fights and quit after my last knockout. Ears rang for 3 days.

I boxed, played CTEball for years, and grew up in the worst lead filled air the world had ever seen. My sons are way calmer than I am, and while I think that's in large measure due to their mother, Amy Stout, breathing clean air and not getting their brains rattled probably helped.
In Canada I'd add hockey to that list. The injuries can get nuts. American football is probably the worst though.
