Interesting (but entirely anecdotal) note since I started responding with human trafficking assistance resources to every incoming sha zhu pan ("pig butchering") text message -- they have stopped completely. I believe I got added to some exclusion list the criminals pass around. So I can endorse this strategy on several levels now.
@vees Neat :) . I'd also appreciate a link.
I'm wondering, such advice would have to specific to the jurisdiction where the victim is held/comes from ?
@hakona @vees Me too. I would like a link as well!
@mitch @hakona "Sometimes people who send messages like this arenโ€™t doing it by choice, and are being forced or trafficked into it. If thatโ€™s whatโ€™s happening, you donโ€™t have to tell me details but please know you can get help confidentially and for free. You can message @BeFree (233733) in the U.S. or visit humantraffickinghotline.org for local numbers in other countries. They can connect you with safety, shelter, and legal help without involving the police unless you want that."
@vees I love this. I'm saving it as an autoexpander on my iPhone and will use it with gusto. Thank you!
@vees @mitch @hakona Brilliant idea. https://humantraffickinghotline.org/en/get-help seems to still be very US-centric, though. Do you know any international resource? A lot of the scammers seem to operate out of other countries.

@HeptaSean @mitch @hakona Hope maybe we can crowdsource them here. I put this together on the spur of the moment and it worked. I have no idea what country the folks texting me are from, but they have access to a virtual phone in the NANP phone number space by virtue of texting me, so that's how I approached it.

@badsamurai
This is what I could find for Australia: https://www.modernslavery.gov.au/support-someone-else/report-suspected-modern-slavery
It seems that the Federal Police ๐Ÿคข or the Salvation Army ๐Ÿคฎ are the only bodies dealing with it. Yikes.
@vees @HeptaSean @mitch @hakona

@badsamurai @vees @HeptaSean @mitch @hakona their "want to learn more" link to "anti-trafficking resources" is a 404 :/

https://freedomcollaborative.org/resources

@vees @HeptaSean @mitch @hakona Maybe once we have a good set of links, we can just put up a quick link page so you can still reply with a single link that would be helpful to as many people as possible. If nothing else, a grebedoc.dev site should do the trick.
@vees https://globalmodernslavery.org/ looks pretty good for international

The Polaris managed Global Modern Slavery Directory (GMSD) is an interactive, searchable map and database of organizations and agencies across the globe that address the issue of modern slavery and human trafficking.

Global Modern Slavery Directory

@vees @mitch @hakona

As near as I could tell, that website only list resources in the 50 United States.

I think an excellent project for the fediverse would be to put a concise list of countries and phone numbers together.

@vees @mitch @hakona @BeFree@jawns.club
The scam factory bosses are probably watching the enslaved talking with victims, though.
Also obviously they won't have access to phones or other non-work digital devices.
@Orca
Evidently dangerous enough that they removed him from their list :) , so a win either way. Maybe small, maybe big.
@mitch @vees
@hakona @mitch @vees
I mean, could you have unintentionally put the enslaved you're in contact with in harm's way?
Bosses in these gang are brutal and they don't hestitant to kill enslaved "workers" just by suspicion of betrayal or attempts to escape.
@Orca @hakona @mitch I do not have enough data to analyze this to any meaningful philosophical or consequentialist conclusion. The average buyer of cheap imported toys at Walmart has probably has a more direct line to suffering and punishment than any text I send to a scammer.
@Orca @hakona @vees Good point about danger to the enslaved person. I may just go back to my current, less interesting routine. Delete and mark as spam.
@mitch @hakona @vees
Thank you.
I also wanted to help them escape, but scam has become a whole industry in some places, and for security reasons "workspace" surveillance might be even harder than office workers in normal companies. Acts that might cause retribution from those bosses are very risky and might not help a lot. A "slave" like this can only learn how to escape by becoming familiar with nearby environment and timings, in a way it's like escaping a prison.
@vees sounds good, can you share those resources with us too? ๐Ÿ˜…
@vees Thanks for posting thisโ€ฆ.
My first experiment with maybe helping an SMS spammer instead of just blocking them. Copy/paste is quick. Thanks @vees
