This really gets hilarious.
Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 loses its Indie Game Award because of placeholder assets.

Not long ago this would've just been low quality placeholder textures.

Gen AI is terrible in many cases, but to make placeholder assets, so people can concentrate on the stuff they want to achieve, is nothing I would criticize.

Being against something only because you are against it, is definitely helping…

@kaiserkiwi It's actually quite simple: The rules are, no use of GenAI. When they submitted they said they didn't use any GenAI, which was either a lie or they started using it after. No matter what, rules are rules.

@Radgryd Well, the rule says »Games developed using generative AI are strictly ineligible for nomination.«.

The key point for me is "developed". They used it for placeholder textures and these got patched out 5 days after release before anyone pushed them because of that.

@kaiserkiwi @Radgryd They still broke the rules.

As you said, they could just place low quality stuff there and be good with it. They used AI and lied about it.

Nothing else. Just rules being strictly applied and someone thinking they're above the rules.

There has also been no further clarification or statement other than "some, but not much". Which is super vague and might imply they used it for more than "just placeholder imagery".

This is a "well the performance enhancement drugs were out of my system before the race started" argument. They didn't even just like, use them early on, they shipped w the stuffs included.
