Seeing local politicians jumping on the whole "candlelight vigil" shtick as a means to garner political clout, and not being able to point it out because people will snap about "dishonouring their memories".
Public grief is an important thing. I actually think that a big part of societies problems would be countered if we knew how to grieve properly.
I grew up in the 80s and 90s in queer Sydney, and have a long history of attending and organising candlelight vigils - they're an important and useful tool, not only as a marker of community grief, but also as a political protest statement.
All of that is cheapened to meaningless nonsense when it's politicians who are running them.
