Have you done anything you're proud of lately? - Lemmy.World

This could be work or recreational related. Anything you’ve done that you sit back and go “hell yeah I did that”. I’m typically wary of working on cars because I have big hands and no auto specialty tools. But, I was able to make a pretty involved (for me) repair last week and I’ve felt really great about it since. What about you?

been working with my dog to curb some anxiety issues she has and making a lot of progress on her reactivity to other dogs and environmental triggers that make her flip out. she is way more chill now and her reactions are less severe.
What training methods are you using?
It takes a ton of patience to train animals. Good on ya!
We’re in the middle of remodeling a house that was builtt in 1981. I’m pretty proud of the changes we’ve made so far. I just draw it out and the contractor does the work, but i think we’ve really improved the design, function, storage, and feel of the house. My biggest disappointment is that I should have hired a real plumber instead of a guy with a truck to replace the cast iron sewer lines.
I hear ya on that last part. You learn to always pay a premium for quality plumbers and electricians.
I think it depends on the job. In house cast iron sewer line replacements are only a few steps in difficulty above swapping a sink, not counting the muscle you need to move them, assuming you’re swapping to PVC.
He went over instead of under the French drain lines because he was digging with a shovel. Now it’s not deep enough to allow proper drainage from a new bar sink. Awaiting next plumber’s ideas.
I have a decent bit of pipe fitting under my belt. I really only call my plumber if it has to do with gas (like my stove). Pipes that move water, no problem. I try not to fuck with electric systems at all though.

I wound my own common mode choke to reduce noise in the power line for my mobile radio

She thicc
She carries a good amount of current, and she don’t get hot doing it!
I’d bet! How many amps is it pulling?
Less than 30 with full modulation from the radio, but this is the low current side. The big side of the system can pull 150 peak
That’s a spicy meatball
tell us more about the process of making it!

It’s a mix 43 ferrite toroid with 3 turns of 8awg wire going opposite directions for positive and negative. The idea is that clean dc power can get by easily, but interference from stray RF, or nearby electrical switching (think dimmable LEDs or similar) will see a really high resistance as it goes around the ring and get lost as heat, letting only the clean power get to the radio.

This same idea is used on usb cables and all kinds of household electronics to protect against data loss and interference.

Pictured above as the knobby things at the ends of a usb cable, these guys are the little cousin of the big bertha version I made

Opposite directions? That explains why mine never worked!
It helps to wind in opposite directions since the opposing flow of common mode current is a big part of what helps it cancel out

I bought a Pentium II 450Mhz Dell tower for $40 at a flea market recently. It was in great condition except for missing a hard drive. Installed a 32gb ssd with a SATA to IDE converter kit and installed Windows 98. It works! This was my first time doing something like this.

Looking for a good graphics card now. I want a VooDoo 2 but those are like $300 on ebay.

Windows 98 is wild hahahaha.
Yo, I just set a Dell Inspirion 4600 out on the curb. Free! No HD. It’ll run Linux.
Keep on looking at eBay! If you don’t have to have an exact model, sometimes you can score deals. I outfitted my 486SX with cards from Romania for cheap!
I finally am allowing myself to take some down time for my own sanity. It’s weird how slowly a work ethic can tale over your mindset and the next thing you know, you’re putting in 24- 25 days in a row of work and are burnt out… Rather than be frizzle-fried by Christmas, I decided to stop now and actually enjoy the holiday. This is a first, and it’s been a long time - too long - that I’ve allowed myself to relax.
Good for you bud, get some rest. How do you like to wind down ?

I’ll find a nice planet and build a base in Creative Mode in No Man’s Sky.

Have a save file editor for my build game, so I don’t have to grind to get the fancy parts and I can just relax and settle in and let my imagination fly.

Solved most 2025 Advent of Code problems using an alien programming language called Uiua.

This is what my day 2 solution looks like:

Advent of Code 2025

Looks like something!
Heard someone say that’s what code looks like for people who don’t code
Uiua is insanity.

Advent of Code

One year I hope to remember that’s a thing that exists when it isn’t already several days into the month.

When I get depressed or stressed, I tend to withdraw hard. I’ve ghosted friends for months at a time before. The guilt that comes with a relative ghosting makes it really hard for me to reach out again and usually I instead just let go of the relationship.

But I had a frank conversation with someone I recently withdrew from and it feels like there’s still a friendship there for us both. So it’s tentative and covered in bandaids, but we’re on good terms again.

You’re friends want to hear from you or they’re not your friends. Simple as. Reach out, I’m sure they miss you :)
It takes a lot of guts on both sides to have a conversation like that. Good for you, keep reaching out, we need people like we need water.

Finished this lil guy 🖖 Probably the last job of the year

HELL YEAH LOVE STAR TREK.
Is this printed or carved?
Carved :) oak and brass
Very cool and impressive!
You do some beautiful work. As a kid I collected a few of the metal miniatures from the board game, loved them. Models don't have to be big to capture the imagination.
I finished my first ever album! omnigon.network/music

Congratulations!!!
This is dope!!
Thank you! ☺️

I’m about halfway through the biggest furniture commission I’ve had so far. It’s only a small bookshelf, but it’s solid 1" thick red oak with wenge accents. I’ve only messed up a couple of minor things along the way 😅

Wow that’ll be one hell of a book shelf, are you going to stain/varnish it ?
Yup! Dark red stain+poly. Hoping that using an oil based one will be able to somewhat sidestep the issue that my garage is like 40° right now.
Nice! I love a good stain, the red is really going to bring out the beauty of the wood!

I just wrapped my kids’ Christmas presents and put them under the tree. I really took my time this year too.

Thats great! Lucky kids

mitigating small apartment problems one adhesive hook at a time

congrats on the car fix!

Omg! Thank you so much! I actually really need to do this with my smaller kitchen utensils.

in that case I highly recommend also getting the little rubber charging cord holders to grip the bottom of each utensil so when you inevitably fling the cupboard door open in a rush because you forgot the damn bay leaf again, the utensils don’t go swinging about making a ruckus lol

for larger things I use a second sideways hook or cord keeper clip at the side/bottom. these ones:

You seriously rock home!
happy hangin-stuff-on-vertical-surfaces 😁
I’m successfully jacking up someone’s sagging floor as one of my first solo jobs. I don’t want to make being my own boss a lifestyle, but it’s cool to have the confidence that I can ditch my future bosses at any time and just fly solo for a bit til I get a new one.
