@davep What makes you think the security services haven't done it too? Their work is by definition not public.

Also, proper security services have access to more information than just what can be gleaned from easily faked AIS broadcasts. Like, you know, primary radar.

@tml I've replied to a couple of similar comments. I think they may have had a bit of help and the goal of the intelligence services would be to highlight the fact they need better resources for both manpower and long range surveillance drones. Bureaucracies don't tend to be terribly agile, and this could definitely bump their requirements up their hierarchy.
