I’m looking to create my own self-hosted ‘drive’ on my Synology NAS. I’d store my files, primarily, plus photos/videos. I’d like to have easy remote access that doesn’t require too many hoops.

I’m overwhelmed by all the options out there. If you have had a good experience with any of them, I’m open to recommendations and tips. Big thanks! 😊

P.S. I want to add, this request does not come from a place of lacking knowledge, but from having an energy limiting disability(ies). I’m looking for cognitive help. Thank you.

@britt

Obviously TrueNAS is quite fetching, but if any of their more recent commercial moves make you queasy then might I recommend Unraid. I've been using Unraid since 2019. Its main strength is in being able to run on just about any combination of cobbled together hardware.

@draeh right on, thank you! I have run TrueNAS previously but I’ll look into Unraid.
@britt I use openmediavault. It's a bit clunky but once it's configured it's been very stable for me.
@britt We’ve got a Synology NAS; for home use, I’ve found that just mapping drives to shared resources works best. Can access remotely using Synology’s DS File, DS Photo, etc and it’s decent. Also tried NextCloud in a container but didn’t care for its file management capabilities. It was OK not great. Don’t have a lot of experience with non-Synology NAS solutions, sorry.
@britt For easy remote access I can recommend Tailscale. It's extremely straightforward to set up and pretty much just works.
@britt What NAS are you using? I've actually been reasonably pleased with Synology's built-in drive app.
@davidseidl I should edit my post to include I am currently running a Synology NAS with about 40TB of available space :)
@britt I have a synology nas that I like
I used a 4 bay unit just because it's a bit less pain to upgrade over time than my old 2
Newer models will have more CPU and stuff, useful if your need performance or are running software directly on it, but for easy fire sharing and backup, older models work fine
@britt how about Synology … Drive?
Should have you covered out of the box.
@pax0707 hey thanks. I have a Synology NAS, but I’m waiting to consider all options and see what folks prefer. :) I updated my post so that’s more clear.
@britt their Drive solution is solid and has been working great for me.
Both localy and remotely (if you decide to connect you NAS to their service, or alternatively you can use VPN).
@pax0707 maybe I’ll just give that a try first… thanks :) I’ve been reluctant, wanting to look at all my options.
