Nihilism is not a single perspective, it is simply a class of philosophies based on there being no inherent purpose or meaning to life. I, as someone who subscribes to optimistic nihilism, believe that despite there being no inherent purpose or meaning to life, I can choose my own; exactly as you describe.
Gaze into the abyss and think about how nice it would look if you could gaze at it from a nice cabin on the lake.
Nihilism is seeing a blank page and saying this is meaningless. Pretty much everyone else sees a blank page as a chance to do something.
