Open source android keyboard that works like iOS - Lemmy.World

Is there an Android keyboard where you control the sursor with the spacebar like on iOS?

HeliBoard let’s you move the cursor by swiping on the space bar. Is that what iOS does?

Thanks, that’s exactly what I’m looking for
Just a heads up, glide typing requires loading a closed source library in Heliboard. Instructions are in the readme and it’s pretty straightforward, but it’s something to be aware of.

Why have we had to live without an open source version for so long?

It takes a lot of time and a lot of peoples typing data from my understanding. It’s relatively easy for Google to make the glide/Swype type since they have a huge amount of peoples typing data. FUTO on the other hand has been making an open source version for probably 6 months or so no, solely relying on volunteers inputting words on their website.

For those interested in helping make the library better: swype.futo.org (it probably only works on mobile)

FUTO keyboard is NOT open source. It is source available.

What is the difference?
It looks like the FUTO keyboard license allows all of that, the only exception is that you can’t modify it for commercial purposes. Aren’t there a lot of other OSS licenses with that same limitation? How is restricting commercial modifications bad?

Sounds good to me! I know that some people prefer free software for the public good and some are ok with commercial use for attracting corporate investment, like Linux.
I didn’t say the keyboard was open source, though I do think I assumed the swipe library would be. That’s fair to point out, but I think its still a good project to support so we have a community sourced library instead of dealing with whatever Google gives us
