Open source android keyboard that works like iOS - Lemmy.World

Is there an Android keyboard where you control the sursor with the spacebar like on iOS?

Thanks folks! Floris and floris and heliboard do exactly what I’m looking for, floris seems better in my cojple of bours of testing
HeliBoard let’s you move the cursor by swiping on the space bar. Is that what iOS does?

Thanks, that’s exactly what I’m looking for
Just a heads up, glide typing requires loading a closed source library in Heliboard. Instructions are in the readme and it’s pretty straightforward, but it’s something to be aware of.

I’m not sure what glide typing is but I installed the keyboard and I can move the cursor with the spacebar.
Also known as gesture typing or swype, typing by dragging your finger for each word rather than tapping each letter.
Why have we had to live without an open source version for so long?

It takes a lot of time and a lot of peoples typing data from my understanding. It’s relatively easy for Google to make the glide/Swype type since they have a huge amount of peoples typing data. FUTO on the other hand has been making an open source version for probably 6 months or so no, solely relying on volunteers inputting words on their website.

For those interested in helping make the library better: swype.futo.org (it probably only works on mobile)

Holy crap, never knew about this. Going to be my new mindless activity instead of sudoku for a while!

FUTO keyboard is NOT open source. It is source available.

What is the difference?
It looks like the FUTO keyboard license allows all of that, the only exception is that you can’t modify it for commercial purposes. Aren’t there a lot of other OSS licenses with that same limitation? How is restricting commercial modifications bad?

Sounds good to me! I know that some people prefer free software for the public good and some are ok with commercial use for attracting corporate investment, like Linux.
I didn’t say the keyboard was open source, though I do think I assumed the swipe library would be. That’s fair to point out, but I think its still a good project to support so we have a community sourced library instead of dealing with whatever Google gives us
This is a stock Samsung Keyboard feature
Works just fine in Gboard too.
They want an Open Source app…
FUTO Keyboard lets you move the cursor with the spacebar like iOS. Also has really good voice-to-text
I really like it, I think its the best I tested (out of 5 maybe)
Technically not open source but source available.
AFAIK it’s open source, just with a non-commercial modification requirement. I’m not sure if that makes it technically not OSS?

That does indeed make it not OSS

unexpected keyboard also does this, as well as a dedicated arrow keys button. it’s also open source and on both fdroid and play store.
FlorisBoard is a good option, very customizable too github.com/florisboard/florisboard

I also use that, mainly because of the Gboard theme (called FloriStyle). Makes it kinda like Gboard except open source and not from Google, which is exactly what I wanted. It has basically the same functions (except for typing suggestions, that’s still being worked ob) but I’m pretty sure it’s more customizable, even aside from the themes.

This is a very basic feature, you have a lot of options to choose from like the other comments have suggested. I use Heliboard personally with glide typing.
This is on pretty much all keyboards. It’s on the standard G Board even. Look into the settings of whatever keyboard you’re already using, it’s likely just turned off.
What’s there so much removed in these comments
What I came back to find out…
Oh shit is Lemmy (at this instance) going the way of reddit? I don’t like mods much at all. Shouldn’t I decide what to read or not?
People promoting proprietary software, which directly goes against the rules and purpose of this community
Yeah, some of what I wrote got removed by a mod too. In the modlog, here’s the link they provided as the reason why: lemmy.ml/comment/16469376
Lemmy.ml and its moderation, am I getting something wrong? - Lemmy

Yesterday I was reading the post about the FUTO keyboard [https://lemmy.zip/post/31178639] where there were a lot of messages deleted by moderators. I’ve commented there > What the heck happened with all the messages deleted by moderator? And it got deleted. Right now you can only see 4, but I’ve counted 19 messages moderated and the post has been locked. Why? I’ve had a look ad the modlog and the messages don’t seems to violate any policy (now they’ve removed them in the modlog too). I’m pinging here lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml] admin and the mods of the open source community where the post was posted so they can have their say about it and clarify the situation to me. @[email protected] [/u/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.ml/u/kevincox] @[email protected] [/u/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.ml/u/CrypticCoffee] @[email protected] [/u/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.ml/u/Lettuceeatlettuce] @[email protected] [/u/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.ml/u/Cloak] @[email protected] [/u/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.ml/u/davel] @[email protected] [/u/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.ml/u/dessalines] @[email protected] [/u/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.ml/u/nutomic] @[email protected] [/u/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.ml/u/JoeBidet] @[email protected] [/u/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.ml/u/cypherpunks] If I’m getting something wrong, please let me know, I’m here to discus and understand if I’m getting something wrong or if something went wrong in the moderation. Thanks for the link!
Pretty sure most all of them do that?
keyboard.futo.org maybe this? Cursor moves on Spacebar, Swipe works and it has an optional feature to have speech to text.
FUTO Keyboard

FUTO Keyboard is a modern, privacy-focused keyboard that runs fully offline. Enjoy swipe typing, autocorrect, predictive text, and more—no internet connection required.

  • Unexpected Keyboard - also has a vertical cursor slide key.
  • Thumb-Key - optional setting. Also works intuitively for text deletion on backspace. Text selection too but that’s buggy.

Where is the vertical dedicated key?
Na minha opinião
In my opinion, the best one is the heliboard.
