This piece, on how GenZ are being trained on how to make phone calls, reminds me that making and receiving a business phone call is a skill that I actually was taught, despite very much having grown up in the heyday of the telephone call.

Experts advise younger workers to practice phone calls with friends and embrace adventure of small talk

In particular, I remember a colleague seeing me reach for the ringing phone in our workshop (the business was small, so an incoming call rang all the phones) and having me rehearse what I was going to say (“Good afternoon, Morgan Automation, Mike speaking…” ) before I actually picked up the handset.
I also recall a later job where a colleague listened to me making a slightly awkward call to a telesales line and introducing me to the phrase “I’d like to place an order please” rather than just starting to read off a list of items that I wanted! Thanks to you both.
It’s easy to roll our eyes at younger folks but we did all have to learn this once!
@drmikepj it’s true! My family didn’t travel much or stay in hotels. Watching my MIL navigate checking in, dealing with an unsatisfactory room, etc. taught me how to deal with that gracefully and politely. My youngest recently mentioned a whole string of “adulting” tasks they felt uncomfortable with so we talked them through.
