Scheduling the events for a *fake* Olympics has given me a newfound respect for the logistics gurus who schedule the real ones.

Like, screw the fat cats at the IOC, but the working folks who coordinate dozens of venues, hundreds of sessions, thousands of athletes and legions of staff? They deserve some massive freakin' kudos.

Related: my games do not have sex/gender splits like the IRL Olympics do. TTRPGs made after 1995 tend to dispense with the "sex and gender have mechanical relevance" pablum that O.G. D&D and its contemporaries had, so there's no good reason to have separate events unless players *want* them separate.

This drastically reduces the number of competition sessions relative to the real Games, and it's scratching a math nerd itch in my head to figure out how the schedule looks afterward.

@valthonis event planning is DAMN difficult

@inherentlee I realized what I was in for when I peeked at the LA28 Games schedule and saw just how detailed it all was.

Then I reached for PostgreSQL, because screw trying to marshal all this in a spreadsheet!

@valthonis do you know about airtable? not that I don't love me some postgres, but airtable is damn quick to pick up, lower technical barrier but still very powerful, has its own forms and automation, and other neat features. I used it for all the management for #rescueTransRescue and #fediZineFest and am currently using it for #stationeryExchange and #siblinghoodOfTheTravelingGreetingCard ..... I do a lot of projects 😅

@inherentlee I used AirTable back in 2018 for managing a whole bunch of stuff around the games I ran in Yewdar at the time. It was a fantastic tool, but since setting up my homelab in 2022 I've been trying to keep new projects in-house as much as possible. I am leery of application dependencies, particularly with the plagiarism machine being inserted silently into all sorts of places.

Entirely possible I'm being paranoid about that, but when a new Postgres LXC takes 5m to provision, why not?

@valthonis that;s SO fair, i don't have a homelab or anything that is stable like that so I work with airtable. the ai is not my fave though and they have absolutely been rolling that bullshit out 🤢

i don't really think you're paranoid, if i had the setup for it i would do similar
