The other day Mrs List and I were talking about when the kiddos should start having their own phones. We didn't really come to a conclusion besides "Not yet, but soon enough to upset some of the other parents we've encountered."

I kind of wish I had the resources to make a dedicated @pzp or #SecureScuttlebutt device (maybe isolated from the main SSB network) and give one each to the kiddos and their friends.

@jeremy_list Our kids are somewhat older than the "must-have cell phone at age 5" generation. We gave them computers very early, and put them in a public location in the house rather than in their rooms, so we could sort of keep little tabs on them, but we didn't really enforce anything. Occasionally we would explain to them "just what is that weird thing you found on the Internet". We tried to keep lines of communication open and it seems to have worked. One kid (now young adult) doesn't do much with the Internet/phone beyond keeping in touch with her friends, and the other is an admin on Wikipedia.
