I am so irritated to have "AI" forced down my throat every single day ("You don't want AI now? We'll ask you again tomorrow!") that, after switching to #GrapheneOS earlier this year, I am also actively evaluating ditching Windows for Linux Mint. How is it so hard for some people to understand consent / "no means no"?
@brandewinder I switched to Linux Mint a few years ago, I started with a dual booted PC which is great for trying to transition, eventually I ended up just removing Windows because I stopped using it
@Roofastronaut at the moment I am booting from USB to confirm without risk that everything I need is actually working, so far so good - I am itching to switch already ;)
@brandewinder @Roofastronaut I'd say go for dual boot forever if you have the space. You lose nothing, I did that for years.

@Roofastronaut

I have a question. I have been wanting to switch to Linux for a long time on my main PC but I'm unsure about the app support. Since, you know, I'm really used to being able to install any application I want. So what has been YOUR experience in this regard? Does the lack of app support ever bother you? Note: I'm not bothered by most games not being available to play natively.

@brandewinder

@HauntedCheeseburger @brandewinder these days with Proton you can run most games just fine, some games even run better than they run on Windows. the biggest exception are multiplayer games that use kernel-level anti-cheat software
@HauntedCheeseburger @brandewinder you can use Wine for pretty much any Windows software, I don't actually do much on my PC outside of Steam for games and my web browser, I don't typically play competitive online games so anti cheat has never been an issue for me, getting a live USB just to dip your toes in doesn't hurt, it will run super slow since it's running off USB though, alternatively dual boot like I did at first until you've found alternatives

@Roofastronaut @brandewinder

Yeah, I've done that a lot of times, used different distros in VMs & have an old laptop in which I do stuff like this. Plus, I'm quite comfortable with BASH as well, so that's not an issue. It is just that I haven't mustered the courage to switch fully. But I simply can't take Microsoft's nonsense any more & that is pushing me even closer to switching.

PS: I wanted to quote the 'getting a live USB just to dip your toes in doesn't hurt,' part.

@brandewinder I installed Linux Mint on my wife's laptop after she got a lot of trouble with Windows on this machine. This was years ago and she's still using Mint, though she's not a heavy computer user
@brandewinder MS seems committed to make Linux Desktop happen.
