There are already enough data leaks, and now they want your government issued ID just to use ChatGPT app. The old web was free, right? You could visit any website. Now just four apps control everything and what you see, and they won't work unless you provide identification. What a mess.

ChatGPT has start issuing mandatory Age Verification https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/1p4vsan/chatgpt_has_start_issuing_mandatory_age/

Whatever you do, do not provide your ID to the worst company out there. Added screenshot in case post gets deleted.

Please note that issues like this put minorities, women, or LGBTQ+ or any other vulnerable people in even more danger because your account gets tagged with a government issued ID. If you don't give an ID, it is hard to prove who you are. So please do not upload an ID just so you can get unreliable answers. Stay safe, friends. Protect your privacy and safety. These are dangerous times and private companies can not be trusted.
@nixCraft in which countries?
@nixCraft duck.ai or local seem like the only way to go

@nixCraft

I would even stop using YT if they asked for my real govt ID-cards, let alone OpenAI.

@nixCraft It's a trip watching these automated ID systems take over everything. When I run into a site that requires this, say a bank or crypto exchange or whatever, I instantly know that there's no possible way I'll ever get an account there because it's going to reject every attempt to ID myself I have. It's going to say I don't have a face. Or it's going to say my enhanced driver's license is a photocopy. Or it's going to keep telling me to hold steady until I literally can't anymore.

@crazyeddie @nixCraft

The right way to do this can he very easy: governments should provide an eID function that only reports whether you're over or under a certain age, while preserving every other aspect of your privacy. I haven't heard of a country doing this, but I think it's the only correct way to handle age verification online. Every other approach has massive risks.

@nixCraft yawn.

You can provide "age verification system" without disclosing identity;

"old web" had significantly less people and the content available was different, same as options to share stuff and make interactions…

@nixCraft Give your PII to an LLM. GENIUS!

@nixCraft That's one good thing about getting old: less valuable data to mine.

I certainly feel for the younger generations, tho. They face FAR too many authoritarian, autocratic oppression now, and for the foreseeable future.

@nixCraft
The thing is, the old web is still out there somewhere. More difficult to find, but it still exists.
@nixCraft I can't understand why anyone would use ChatGPT in the first place

@3rdi @nixCraft

I think some jobs are starting to demand it.

@nixCraft

the end of the private citizen. Corporations now own you, and your access to your govt services.

@nixCraft Wow, I'm glad #AI and #ChatGPT isn't being used by students to do their school work—

What? They are?

How do you spell ironic?

@sfwrtr @nixCraft

What about teachers? My son has turned against LLMs and is complaining about teachers who use terrible AI generated text. Either in exams or assignments, or even in comments on his work.

@nixCraft
Honestly, if it was only big companies such as OpenAI, Facebook, Microsoft... I couldn't care less.

The thing is that in some countries this is becoming mandatory, and it is going to be enforced in almost everywhere now that EU has approved their 'Chat Control' mass surveillance plan...
