(Update: they are not all the same, waahhhh), Bicycle headsets are NOT standard size. Gave up on the seat post, and now will attempt to take its components and attach them to another frame I have. The only question is if I can re-paint that frame (currently generic gray)... depends on heat and wind this week. (warm = good for painting, but wind = bad for painting... unless you like your paint dust speckled). #BikeTooter #frankenbike
Drat, this is not happening. Forks are the right length, but the other frame has a 1 1/8 inch headset, versus the 1 inch fork. #BikeTooter
@ai6yr I've shimmed a 1" steerer for a 1 1/8" stem, but I don't think works for the headset races :(. You might be able to get a weird headset but a different fork is probably simpler
@ai6yr In the world of 1" threaded, neither headsets, crown races, nor internal diameters are standard. https://www.sheldonbrown.com/cribsheet-headsets.html

@alrs Yeah, it did seem like there was a somewhat standard 1" standard. How can you tell if it will or will not work, however?
@ai6yr French and non-Carlton English Raleighs are the most common pains in the ass. The only difference between UK/US/Japanese 1" headsets is usually just the crown race diameter.

@ai6yr
For painting, a box, tent or makeshift enclosure keeps the over-spray from getting everywhere. Keeps the bugs, dust and twigs off the paint until dry.

Do you have any stray wallboard?
I think you need a bigger box.

@EugestShirley I have lots of cardboard!
@ai6yr
After spraying, use an extra piece to close off the box until dry.
I hope you get a nice finish.
@EugestShirley 48.5F right now outside, need to let it get up hopefully to 60F. Probably should take the paint cans inside, need to decide what color, LOL. Or maybe make it a Jackson Pollock style frame!

@ai6yr
You can get a nice ombré with spray paint. Just pick two colors that go well together. They usually blend well when they are next to each other on a color wheel.
I could see you riding a blend of high visibility yellow and orange.

@ai6yr

You/the replies seem to have covered threaded - non threaded are standardised to the extent that you "just" need to specify
1st type:internal semi external
2nd internal diameter top IE top of steerer tube
3rd external diameter top
4th int diam bottom IE bottom of steerer tube
5th ext diam bottom
6th straight or angled contact
Poss 7th angle of contact points
Poss 8th colour of cap cover if ext

To make it easier steerer tube is most often quoted in inches the rest in mm

:-)

@ai6yr the lye didn't work? Or is this a different bike project?
@MLE_online The lye did not work... yet. Would require more lye. Given the condition of the bicycle seat post stem (hole in the side, banged up) and the mess dealing with lye, I am giving up on dissolving the rest of the aluminum stem. (there's at least 6 inches more of stem in there!!!!!!)
@MLE_online But, this one not happening either, as I have a 1 inch fork and a 1 1/8 headset, so that's not going to work.
@ai6yr How much stem did you dissolve?
@MLE_online Not enough!!! LOL. I poured in enough lye to have a giant cloud of gas (hydrogen?), but the stem isn't moving at all, and it's just a bit pitted. I suspect a LOT more lye is required.
@MLE_online I only put in about 30 grams of lye (diluted out with an equivalent amount of water, so very strong).
@ai6yr Just fill the whole thing with lye and add enough water to barely cover it. Make sure you attach a hose to the outlet so you can capture the hydrogen gas to burn to heat your coffee while you hang out and wait for it to finish dissolving the post

@MLE_online

Meanwhile, across town:

"WHAT WAS THAT BIG EXPLOSION?!?!?!"

@ai6yr hey, at least the stem isn't stuck in the tube anymore. you don't need eyebrows to ride a bike, right?
