they should make games that are more fun than programming
[note: this is not a glowing recommendation of programming]

i'm looking at my steam library and my thoughts are "i'd rather write a webdav server"

do you understand
(please recommend me multiplayer coop games that are actually fun. team pvp is fine too if i can make a team with like 2 people total and have it work)

have you _seen_ webdav xml. it's almost as bad as soap. and i hated soap
i think i still had vodka left somewhere

@whitequark why remind me of SOAP? I was having a perfectly fine time, and now I remember that soap exist(s/ed)

Mean

@hp fine i added a cw: soap to the post

@whitequark SOAP itself was... OK, I guess? for a rehash of all the previous attempts at RPC protocols.

The thing that got me was all the "extensibility" stuff it: the security layers that couldn't work (because XML), the attempts at registries, the belief that you only needed the WSDL to access an arbitrary service...

(I did once write a vnc-over-soap service. It was slooooow.)

@whitequark noooooo don't do it to yourself!!

I hear Split Fiction is great and have been meaning to try it

@whitequark
depends on your preferred flavor of coop. overcooked 2 if tactics and coordination are desired, smash brothers minus fighting and character differences.

ME: I just want to play a video game. STEAM: Here are 302 video games you already own. ME (annoyed): Not THOSE

vmst·io

@glyph it's not even, like, a general annoyance in the direction of the steam library

i played the majority of them at least in some form and i can offer a specific reason why if i launch this i'll be miserable

@whitequark my own library carries a variety of unsatisfied feelings unique to each title
@whitequark It's not a Steam game and most of it is single-player and multiplayer only unlocks a few chapters in but Xenoblade X has some online co-op missions that are fun because X itself is fun, if a bit quirky (the original is offline now but DE exists).
@whitequark the most recent coop game we've had fun with was Escape Simulator (the first one, but the sequel looks good too).
@whitequark does Minecraft count

@whitequark I can warmheartedly recommend Deep Rock Galactic !

- PvE co-op up to 4 people (closer to 4 is better imho).
- Single-purchase game, no microtransactions bullshit.
- Overall pretty simple mechanics, generally good vibes.
- If you resort to matchmaking, possibly nicest game community I've ever gotten to play with
- Lore is simple but fun. Game and devs don't take themselves seriously. Just so good overall !

@whitequark

(I've seen your answer dismissing satisfactory as too close to programming, I get it and assume that rules factorio out too. Also, I've seen a mention of pvp, not sure if that includes fps or not ^^')

(Also, if you're unsure but want to give it a try with someone familiar with the game, feel free to ping me ;) )

@toadjaune yeah i'm fine with fps

@whitequark well then, I'll let the trailer do its job :)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2_GV33zBf3A&pp=ygUaZGVlcCByb2NrIGdhbGFjdGljIHRyYWlsZXI%3D

I realize I somehow forgot to explicitcly mention what I think makes it so good :
There are 4 classes, and the game is built around making them naturally synergize. That's why 4 dwarves (one of each class) is ideal, although 3 works just fine. 2 is a bit unwieldy imho but does work. Solo is fine (a bot accompanies you to compensate) but kinda sad.

(again, feel free to hit me, should you want to try :) )

@whitequark

(also, I do understand, although I wish I had that same feeling every now and then. Feeling paralyzed and unable to do anything is just as bad, if not worse :/)

@whitequark stick it to the stickman! https://store.steampowered.com/app/2085540/Stick_It_to_the_Stickman/

Been playing it with a friend a bunch and it's kind of the right mix of jank and stupid but in a fun way

@whitequark if you don't mind warham fantasy stuff,, vermintide 2's left 4 dead with swords and it's zero dollars on steam this weekend
@whitequark this is not normally a game I recommend to people even though it's one of my favorites, but have you tried DotA 2? It's got a lot going on. Interesting game on many levels.
@whitequark this sounds important. god knows I need something like this or I fucking lose it.
is there something in particular that has made multiplayer coop games in the past fail to meet this need? I can guess, but it would help to narrow scope a bit.
@whitequark Bellwright (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1812450/Bellwright/) was pretty fun. Played it on a recent game night with a couple of friends. It had an interesting progression. Also NPC settlers management was unique and interesting. We continued playing it all until the end game.
Steamで34% OFF:Bellwright

@whitequark portal 2 has great two player coop!
@purpleidea yes but 11th portal playthough isnt fun anymore
@whitequark pyanadons with enem^Wfriends?!
@whitequark arc raiders for team pvp

@whitequark What type of games are you into? Do you prefer mouse and keyboard or controller? Are you looking for online coop or couch coop (and will you be in the same room as the person you play with)?

I may have some suggestions but I do need a bit more info to pick the right suggestion from my library :)

@whitequark Towerfall! It’s made by Celeste devs with Celeste-ish movement. You jump around and shoot arrows at the baddies. The arrows home ever so slightly and the whole thing is so tightly designed it’s like jump -> nyoooom -> squish -> plop. It’s incredibly clever and every level can modified in like 12 different ways. The campaign has co-op. No online play. Also it + dlc are on sale for $4.23 at the moment.

@whitequark It’s probably not gonna be very useful, because they’re all old and mainstream, but I played a lot of two-player co-op with my dad back when we were on the same LAN. Favourites were:

– Quake II
– Duke Nukem 3D
– UT2003 or Quake 3 in Team Deathmatch, us vs. bots
– Halo
– Halo 3: ODST (Xbox 360)
– Some Medal of Honour episodes, like Spearhead, I think.
