@ai6yr Oh, that’s not good. When I lived in Mexico my mother and father-in-law both got it and were laid out for weeks. It’s nicknamed breakbone fever, presumably because it feels like your bones are breaking. 😬

@conejoclint @ai6yr One of my coworkers got dengue on a trip to Samoa. Said she never suffered so badly before. But apparently a second case is even worse, as the pain come s mostly from your immune system going wild.

Dengue is sufficient justification for making mosquitoes extinct.

@jhavok @conejoclint @ai6yr

Worst pain I ever felt for 10 days nonstop.. So maybe that species of mosquito. They hide in the bushes and bite when you sleep.

@oldoldcojote @conejoclint @ai6yr Yeah, a specific species of mosquito carries dengue. When we started seeing them it was panic time at the tourist office. There have been arguments over whether to use genetic tech to extinguish them.
@conejoclint @ai6yr My brother-in-law got it twenty years ago and he still gets pain in his legs from that. They have a vaccine for it now, but still. (Edit: whoops read too quickly, my BIL got chikungunya not Dengue).

@jayalane @conejoclint @ai6yr

Interesting. A bad fever triggers dengue like pain since I had it in my 20's. Covid made it as bad as the dengue.

@ai6yr oh, fun! That's one that worried me when doing field work in the Afar region of Ethiopa. Sleeping under a mosquito net watching clouds of mosquitoes flying just outside in a Dengue-endemic region was not very much fun.

Didn't get Dengue, but did get bacterial dysentery. 0/10 - would not recommend.

@grajohnt @ai6yr

Had both. Dengue is the worst.

@oldoldcojote @grajohnt 😬 Okay, now I am absolutely going to start using the mosquito spray every time. So many mosquito bites the last two months.

@ai6yr @grajohnt

You're probably in little danger unless you sleep outside w no netting at night.

@oldoldcojote @grajohnt Ah, except we now have Aedes Egyptii. Daytime ankle biters. Nearly impossible to see. Out at all hours. 😬

@ai6yr @oldoldcojote @grajohnt

We have them here in southern Arizona too.

I've heard bad things about Dengue fever, especially the risks of repeat infections.

Yay! (sarcastic)

@Mikal @ai6yr @grajohnt

Every exposure gets worse. Thats why they can't come up with a vaccine for either of the two varieties.

@oldoldcojote @ai6yr @grajohnt

Maybe Director of Dengue RFK will find a cure. Aquarium cleaner or something.

@ai6yr At least it's not right near my house like last time
