[Rec] Anime with great emotional payoff
[Rec] Anime with great emotional payoff
Most of the stuff that comes to mind is already on your list.
Maybe you’d like the movie, Colorful, or the series Your Lie in April?
This is a stretch, but maybe also consider Shin Sekai Yori? The particular things that’ll hit you there are, uh, a bit different though, if it works on you.
Troll Answer: School Days. 👹️
Shin Sekai Yori is a goddamn semitruck to my emotions good gods.
Not really a fan of the nihilistic messaging but I gotta say I still apreciate just how much effort the animators and writers put into the creation of SSY. Also the ending is like peak🤌 especially after some of the episodes where I just sit in shock, horror, and emptiness.
School Days😬🤮
It’s rare that a show makes me that mad, and the ending is unforgettable, but I’m pretty sure it’s not quite the same kind of emotional payoff that OP’s looking for… so, “Troll Answer”. ;-)
School Days
Nice boat
Angel Beats
Emotional, yes.
Payoff? IMO, not sufficiently.
I debated mentioning Eureka Seven in my comment…
Just because it’s pretty long and has multiple arcs, each of which have good payoffs.
It’s a good pick tho. It delivers on the level of expectation that it sets up.
Okina is a bamboo cutter in ancient rural Japan. One day in the forest, he finds a tiny baby in the folds of a bamboo shoot. He brings the creature home to his wife Ounaa and they decide to keep her and raise her as a princess. She is clearly not of this world. Kaguya grows at an unnatural rate, soon maturing into an uncommonly beautiful young woman. Since Okina has now also found a cache of gold and treasure in the forest, every suitor wants Kaguya. But this is not a fairy tale of courtship and marriage.
I find stories where the main character(s) persevered through great struggles, and got rewarded for it at the end, have the most satisfying emotional payoff.
You have watched so many anime that I find it hard to recommend something new😅
The best that I can recommend - that you haven’t complete - is Umamusume season 2. IMO it’s possible to follow the plot even if you skip season 1.
Within the horse-racing world, the horse girls of Team Spica have been gaining popularity as they continue to rack up victories. The one receiving the most attention in the group is Toukai Teiou, known for her cheerful personality and exceptional running skills. Teiou aims to become an undefeated Triple Crown horse girl by winning all three G1 races consecutively, a feat that has not been accomplished since the legendary Symboli Rudolf managed to do so many years ago. On her path to obtaining the Triple Crown, Teiou is met with many challenges, encountering both old and new rivals. Amidst her fierce rivalries, however, Teiou is soon confronted with decisions that will leave a huge impact on her very own racing career. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Legend of The Galactic Heroes. It’s a slow burn, but it has dozens of characters and many of them have emotionally satisfying arcs.
We haven’t seen the second season yet…
But Dungeon Meshi has a fantastic ending. Once the full series is adapated, it will no doubt be an all-time-favorite for many.
Death Parade
Gurren Lagann
Also how tf has no-one mentioned KATANAGATARI.
I mean, it pays off in terms of the plot it sets up.
The world-building is what leaves you begging for more set in it :D
Welcome to Kowloon Walled City: a dystopian townscape where the people are brimming with nostalgia, and where the past, present, and future converge. Amid the hidden emotions and extraordinary daily lives of the men and women working in its confines, a tale of romance begins to unfold for real estate agent Reiko Kujirai—one that feels as familiar as Kowloon itself…
All involve writer Jukki Hanata, who worked on “A Place Further Than The Universe” I’m pretty sure, and are all emotional bangers.
These two are my favorite action shows, strong political overtones and actual ends to the stories, very satisfying. Same creator for both.
Medalist (sports comedy)
I always looked at it as more of a sports drama with some really good comedic moments. Either way, top-tier show. Looking forward to Season 2 this January!
Yeah you could go either way, it handles tone control excellently. It’s got everything!
Winter season looking pretty good, I’m excited for Medalist and Frieren the most. I need to catch up on Oshi No Ko that’s coming back too
In the town of Engamori, supernatural beings known as yokai, gods, and humans have been living amongst each other for centuries, each striving to lead ordinary, peaceful lives. One day Buchio, a 20-year-old cat, mysteriously evolves into a nekomata, a feline yokai, near the end of his life. Although this allows him to stay with his human family longer, it also makes him question the reason behind his evolution, along with the special abilities that have recently manifested in himl. Meanwhile, an elementary school girl named Mutsumi "Muu-chan" Sugimoto begins to feel more attached to Jirou, a tengu—a crow-like yokai—and Jirou begins to fill the void left by her late father. While both are unable to properly communicate their intentions at first, they gradually form a companionship where they protect each other. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
