@volberg.bsky.social "Connect" to BeiDou? Isn't BeiDou the Chinese equivalent of GPS and GLONASS? These systems transmit signals one way only. From the satellites towards the Earth. You don't "connect" to a GPS satellite system either. You just *listen* to signals from the satellites.

In earlier reports of this I read that the buses had mobile data radio, like mobile phones, that used plain SIM cards, IIRC ones from Romanian operators, and likely use that to be *connected* to the manufacturer. Has somebody pulled the BeiDou aspect out of thin air?

Bit of mish match translation in OP but we know, the fact it wasn't using GPS was just one of the interesting things www.motor.no/aktuelt/sikk...

Sikkerhetsekspert til politiet: «Ikke stol på bilprodusentene»

@tml @volberg.bsky.social I understand it that the car tried to *receive* the BeiDou signal. A bit hard inside a rock cave, I suppose. Additionally a two-way mobile-phone connection to the manufacturer. BeiDou or some other GNSS to know where you are, mobile Internet to provide telemetry and be controlled. I know that my EV (Volvo, i.e., Geely) also has both. Handy for over-the-air software and map material updates. No idea if they could remotely control my car... in which case I would be just as concerned about Google as about Geely.
