The more I learn about #Microsoft #Windows, the more I don't want to use it.

I've started the process of transitioning over to #Linux (more specifically #ZorinOS ) and I'm liking how it is working.

So far I've had two big problems:
1. Sync.com doesn't have a Linux app, which is unfortunate as I switched to them from Google drive to have better security with a Canadian-based server.
2. Family Tree Maker - I'm debating if it is worth trying to run it in Linux, or if I should just use it on a windows machine when I use it.

Otherwise, I've found workaround for most other things including the fact that my favorite old school graphics program (Paint Shop Pro version 4.12-circa 1996) runs nicely in Wine.

@jmb I use gramps on Linux for genealogical work. It looks like it can import data from Family Tree Builder, so that might be an option for you https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Import_from_another_genealogy_program#Family_Tree_Maker

@nausicaa Does gramps have syncing abilities with Ancestry.com?

My main reason I use FTM is to have my own backup of media files, documents, etc. If I sync with Ancestry periodically, I retain access to those docs through the software even when I'm not subscribing to ancestry.

@jmb @nausicaa

I use geneweb on Linux. I have gramps because it seems better supported, but have not yet switched to it. I use WikiTree more than Ancestry.

Ancestry dot com can export or import GEDCOM. GEDCOM is standard invented by familysearch dot com and works with most genealogy software.

I use #DebianLinux and macOS. Since I retired, I do not do Windows.

FamilySearch and WikiTree are cost free with login. I do not understand Ocaml to risk exposure to internet.

@johnmoyer @nausicaa Thanks. I will check out geneweb too.

I use a lot of different free tools including FamilySearch, Wikitree and findagrave, but Ancestry has been pretty valuable in the past. But due to cost constraints, I tend to subscribe for a few months a year and use the FTM software to sync and save all of my media and documents offline.

@jmb I haven't tried that. According to the documentation, gramps can import data exported from Ancestry.com, but it looks likes it's a manual process https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/Import_from_another_genealogy_program#Ancestry.com
