In ancient Denmark, ferns were believed to be connected with supernatural powers. Myths arose claiming that the "seeds" belonged to the Devil and that witches used them to cast spells. Ferns don't produce flowers or visible seeds, which was mysterious. Since their method of reproduction (by spores, invisible to the naked eye) wasn't understood, legends emerged to try to explain it.
I took this photo in Aalborg, where those legends still seem to linger among the fronds.
