"Ten minutes more of suspense. Then, again, loud, sudden, violent, the bell rang! We burst into the room. There he was, standing in the middle of the floor, rigid, petrified. He groaned in in a terrible, husky voice, 'Oh my God, I have seen it!' and fell down dead." - Rhoda Broughton #PhantomsFriday
Broughton's 1873 story 'The Truth, The Whole Truth, And Nothing But The Truth' ended with the note: 'This is a true story.' It was set in a house in Mayfair and blamed at the time for propagating ghastly tales told about 50 Berkeley Square, Mayfair, which became London's most infamous haunted house.
