Paid tier of a podcast except what you get is •less• content because they actually put each episode through a proper editorial process and trim it to 1/3 the original length
@inthehands Basically paying for a 2x speedup button, but without needing 2x bandwidth in your brain? :)
@sethmlarson
Distinct from a 2x button, because somebody with deep knowledge about the subject matter has made careful subjective decisions about what is important. If you want to view it purely as a “brain bandwidth” question: not just less wall time, but less brainpower spent filtering and more spent reflecting.
@inthehands As a matter of fact, the German podcast @lagedernation has a "compact" version for paying customers.
I can't imagine that they can trim it to 1/3 though. There's a lot of content... @vieuxrenard, one of the hosts, is also active here, maybe he can tell us more.
@cd_home @inthehands @vieuxrenard Our compact version is trimmed by hand to roughly 50% of the free show’s running time. That’s actual editorial work which we entrust to a veteran audio journalist (not one of the hosts) to achieve the necessary degree of ruthlessness ;)
@inthehands I would pay for an editor to trim out like 90% of stall words ("uh", "you know.." etc)

Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes here at OTM? (Hint: Not everybody speaks as cleanly as it might seem.) A few years ago, we invited reporter John Solomon backstage to see ho...

@inthehands This is why I only listen to podcasts produced and edited by professional broadcasters. It's not a skill that comes naturally.
@inthehands
I suspect all podcasts would benefit from a harsh editor. Or an editor at all.
@inthehands I'd pay for a written version. Not just a transcript (although that would already be lovely), a written article with the same content but properly editorialized into written format.
@krazykitty
99pi does this: https://99percentinvisible.org Their written versions are never as rich as the audio, but do generally provide an excellent 5-minute read to summarize a 40-minute episode.
@inthehands oh that's a good idea. Recently, I keep remembering an old quote "If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter.", and this seems like a good way to make it possible
@inthehands this is a very profound toot.
@inthehands or free video with adverts, paid downloadable text and relevant charts...
@inthehands Not exactly the same, since it’s a newsletter, but similarly: https://github.com/sponsors/simonw/
@inthehands This might get me to listen to a podcast.
@inthehands For certain kinds of podcasts, yes, when delivering facts or analysis is the point. For other kinds, where the listening is the experience, it would be like listening to music that was edited down to 1/3 the length.
@ahltorp
Speaking as a composer, I also hear a lot of new music that could benefit from being edited to 1/3 its length. I place a high aesthetic value on distillation.
