My kids have got stuck on a super annoying Minecraft YouTube channel (Chip and Milo).

It's not the worst, but Milo's voice is SO grating.

Can anyone recommend me good, educational, or at least less annoying YT channels about Minecraft? Where maybe they can learn some fun engineering or physics stuff?

They're currently playing via the Android app on tablets, if that changes how relevant a channel is to the way they can play. And they're more about Creative than Survival. Age 5 & 7.

Thank you!

@sarajw 💯 same. Not only is the voice annoying, the quality is also Not Very Good™.

I find it particularly difficult to explain to my kids why I want them to stop watching it without letting on that it annoys me, because I don't want them to suddenly realize they can irritate me on-demand.

@sarajw
When I don't like a channel my kid is watching, I ask YT to stop recommending it. The only way I found how to do it is to open the account my kid uses in a desktop browser, I open a video from that channel and look at the recommendations if there's a video from that channel, then I click on the option to stop recommending the channel.
@mauriciofauth oh I've unshared it already (they use YouTube Kids in the mode where I can decide exactly what they have access to) - I just want to find an alternative... :)
@sarajw Minecraft drives me nuts in general. I even loved LEGO as a kid and I don't get the whole Minecraft thing. Had friends my own age saying they loved it when it came out. My kid is 18 now and he does still play some, he played a LOT when he was younger 😂
@jake4480 I don't mind it, as they're building and using their imaginations and playing together and stuff - it's not a bad start in big world games, esp as they're just playing locally for now. They are talking about it a LOT though hahah
@sarajw haha yeah the creative aspects are amazing. He's shown me places he's made, and he and his friends and cousins all meet up at each others places 😂

@mikesusz thank you I'll have a look!

@sarajw I don’t have great news for you.. my kids are 7 and 9 and very much into Minecraft and watching YT Minecraft channels. The 7yo is a fan of Milo and Chip, but luckily the 9yo thinks it’s annoying, too. So I want to say there’s light at the end of the tunnel if you wait it out, but the thing I’ve learned from the 9yo is that Minecraft YouTubers are a gateway into what I consider a worse load of content: Mr. Beast.. I think Mr. Beast was hanging out with some other Minecraft YouTubers so my kids have gotten into it by association.

Now when they watch episodes where they go on million dollar vacations or do contests and hand out money I wind up lecturing the kids about how this isn’t how real people interact with each other and how it’s all just entertainment.

It’s sort of sad and I’m still trying to figure out how to work through it. Hope the best of luck and I’d be interested in what other folks say are alternatives.

@wbrowar Oof, thank you!

Right now I pretty much control what channels they get to see - either they use YouTube Kids where I control exactly what's available, or we're watching together and I veto on the spot. There's some really odd content out there.

@sarajw I am a child of the Minecraft era, and thus hopefully well equipped to answer this.

The version of Minecraft available on Android is referred to as the ‘Bedrock’ edition. Most YouTubers play on the original version of Minecraft which is only available on PC and is called the ‘Java Edition’. Both codebases are developed and maintain relative parity while getting the same updates. Some specific things might not work, and far less mods are available for the bedrock version, but they’re largely the same.

When I was young, Stampy was a go-to of mine. His Stampy’s Lovely World series is scripted, kid friendly, respectable, and long-running. He also created an educational children’s series titled Wonder Quest. You might find his voice and laughter a tad grating.

More recent active creators I’m familiar with include Grian and Mumbo Jumbo. Both are active and members of a large community Minecraft multiplayer sever titled ‘Hermitcraft’. Hermitcraft Season 11 is about to start very soon (Nov 8th). The seasons are all independent of one another, and while there are callbacks to older ones, one needn’t have watched them for a full experience.

There are a wide assortment of members of the Hermitcraft server. Some are targeted towards younger viewers, and some are more targeted towards mature viewers (though aren’t adult in nature). Watching some of the more mature YouTubers creating content on the server could give you a common ground with your kids if you’re so inclined.

Grian is rather mischievous and focuses much more on building, and Mumbo Jumbo is much more into redstone, which is the technical/engineering part of Minecraft. Both are family friendly and have large backlogs.

Happy to answer further questions and provide more recommendations if needed.

@vale this is fantastic! Thank you so much
@vale by the way, RE grating voices - I can take the likes of Blippi! But Milo is something else...

@sarajw I personally break at Blippi. I only managed to listen to Milo for a picosecond before hurling my computer out a window.

I remember being on a plane once and the child diagonally in front of me was watching Blippi on repeat. I don’t even think they had the volume on, but I could hear him within my head tormenting me.

@vale hahahaha. Yep.

I can cope I guess, because I know he's safe. Milo whines at Chip a lot and they do a safe baby trash talk with each other which is kind of mindless, hence wanting out...

@sarajw Regarding Stampy’s Lovely World episodes, he occasionally says ‘bloody’ in the very early ones. YouTube Kids doesn’t have any of these included obviously, but if they’re watching on standard YouTube then you might want to skip straight through to episode 100 by which point everything is very much polished and he is very aware of his audience.
@vale we can manage that. Thank you!

@vale have subbed the kids' YT Kids to Stampy and Mumbo Jumbo, thank you!

You can run YT Kids in two modes - either let YouTube decide what's suitable, or completely control what's allowed into the walled garden - and the latter allows me to share videos and channels that aren't specifically for children, but I deem suitable. Works well for us.

Chip and Milo are out, muahahaa.

@vale also I like the Britishness - they're growing up bilingual English/German, and the English they get is British. It's easier if they view lots in the, uh, correct accent 😅
@sarajw @vale So the more “bloody” in the videos, the better? 🤣

@yatil @vale something like that 😅

With regards swearing I have a bigger problem with English songs being played on German radio without having swears removed/changed, or lots of sweary people in "daily dose of cats" or "funny parrot" videos 🫣

@sarajw

I remember stumbling on this before and thought it was pretty cool - they have some old videos that show how things within Minecraft work too: https://www.youtube.com/logicalgeekboy

Then there are also peaceful build channels (or often called 'no commentary') where you don't have to worry about grating voices at all 😅

https://www.youtube.com/@Peaceful-craft

They can be quite calm and often showing interesting builds - but perhaps not enough to engage kids

(might be good to send them to sleep though! 😅)

@hejchristian lol noooo screens in bed! Thank you :D
@sarajw That's a solid rule 😅
@hejchristian I don't hold to it myself, mind! But will hold it as long as I can with the kids for their own health... I'm too far gone 🤪

@sarajw The peaceful Minecraft videos might be good to send you to sleep then 🙃

My current go to is reading documentation 😂 The heavy eyelids soon come when I start digging into some new CSS feature at midnight.

@hejchristian I need no help, the kids tire us out - I'm currently reading Dune, and while the only dry thing in the books is Arrakis - fiction helps me best doze off 😴
@sarajw Ohh books is a good one yes! Though because I want to read it I fight the sleep, and next thing I know I've read over the same page like 10 times 😅
@hejchristian ha yes, have done that before too. And if I'm getting to the end of the last chapter, I'm kind of f*cked if I finish the book before falling asleep. Then I'm left wistful and awake.

@hejchristian @sarajw

sorry to butt in, but I used to do the same with The European Convention on Human Rights when I was studying to become a copper. Worked like a charm.

@DodoTheDev @hejchristian Butt in wherever you like, friend!
