permission to be earnest? I've been sober for a bit over five years. That's a good thing. Do I miss it? Fuck-yeah. Will I fall off the wagon at some point? Maybe. But I hope not. Recently I was with some people (who didn't know me when I did drink). Why I wasn't drinking came up in conversation (tedious, but fine) & my "right" to call myself sober was challenged on the basis that I was drinking an alcohol-free beer & that I don't go to meetings. Are they right? Anyway, it pissed me off.
@baggy if you’re not doing the thing you don’t want to do you’ve succeeded. Who the fuck is anybody to tell you otherwise? Recovery is an endeavor, a journey, a state of being, call it what you will but it’s certainly not a certification that anybody has any business gatekeeping.
@lids thanks. that was useful and nice and good to hear.
@baggy I’m glad. Recovery gatekeeping upsets me.

@baggy @OddJob wow! That's some pretty harsh judgement, and it sounds very, very ignorant. Sorry you had to deal with that. 😒

Last I checked, no one has trademarked the word sober, and Merriam-Webster hasn't updated the entry yet to include the part about meetings.

What is with people that love gatekeeping so much? 🙄

@baggy they're being thoughtless af, they are also dead wrong.
@baggy
Some people need guardrails and a sense of superiority to stay on track. It sounds like you're not one of them 🙃

@baggy

Fuck that shit. Everyone's sober journey is different. I got sober a little over a year ago. I've never been to a meeting. I drink NA beers and mocktails. No one gets to tell you what recovery should look like.

@baggy I have no idea of your situation on your side, but I can tell you a very good friend of mine had a problem with alcohol and simply quit about 8 years ago. He drinks 0% beer and enjoys it. Is he sober? He is in my books, and to hell with anyone that says he isn't.

Keep going, you are doing great.

@baggy I no longer drink because I don't like how it makes me feel afterwards. If anybody asks me, I just tell them straight up (har), I quit drinking. Offer me a cranberry juice or a ginger ale instead.
@baggy sounds like they have a pretty narrow understanding of recovery. You’re good
@baggy you do you, boo, and I mean that in a good way: if what you're doing works for you, by all means, carry on, and joke'em if they can't take a fuck.
