Dammit Robin, get your head on straight!!
@codinghorror This is like saying that nobody should ever be sad.

@pinguino @codinghorror ideally, yes

Especially when easily preventable

@purple @codinghorror But impossible.

@pinguino @codinghorror putting aside that the proposition was actually about preventing poverty not sadness, …an awful lot of sadness can be avoided actually.

Eliminating poverty would go a long way to doing that in fact.

Yes certainly, people will still die and that'll be sad, and sometimes things won't go your way and that may sting.

But the despair of being unable to provide for your children, the tragedy of life lost to poor nutrition, and so much more, they very much can be avoided.

@purple @codinghorror How do you avoid parents being unable to provide for their children? Or to be malnourished?
@pinguino @codinghorror you feed them
@purple @codinghorror I don't have the resources to feed millions of people.
@pinguino @codinghorror society, collective humanity
@purple @codinghorror Humanity includes parents.
@pinguino @codinghorror also millionaires
@purple @codinghorror So, who's gonna pay, all humanity or just a few?
@pinguino @codinghorror humanity collectively, each according to ability
@purple @codinghorror Who comes to decides each one's ability?
@pinguino @codinghorror we call it democracy
@purple @codinghorror Oh, so Donald Trump comes to decide?
@pinguino @purple @codinghorror
Isn’t this exactly why we are getting taxed?
To cover for welfare?
Still… there is poverty.
So is the system broken? Or is it simply collectively unaffordable?
