An afternoon of pricking sloes awaits.
@thebaywindowgirl same here, one day soon. They're in the freezer at present.
@thebaywindowgirl just wash & freeze them, don’t worry about pricking them. Tip straight into the alcohol when ready to make the drink.
@AliHeaPalk They have been frozen, but I always prick them. I’ve been making sloe gin for years.
@thebaywindowgirl aren't the sloes small this year though. More but smaller
@thebaywindowgirl I’d frozen mine because I didn’t have gin handy at the time and didn’t prick them beforehand. Freezing is supposed to make the skins split but I didn’t want to leave it to chance so I gave each frozen sloe a short, sharp rub on the Parmesan grater, just a tiny nick. So much easier.
@helenclayton I’ve never trusted the freezing to split the skins, I always prick them. The grater is an interesting idea, I’ll give it a try with the second batch.
@thebaywindowgirl I only tried the grater on frozen ones, could be messy with fresh but only one way to find out!
@helenclayton My second batch is unpricked and frozen, so I can give it a go.
@thebaywindowgirl I quickly realised that trying to prick frozen sloes was nigh on impossible…and dangerous.
@helenclayton Hehe, yeah. I defrosted mine.
