If you have been alarmed by a loud grinding sound, I apologize: that's me gnashing my teeth as I watch a video (at 2x speed) to get tech support information that is not available by text.
@ShaulaEvans I can hear it all the way down here 😬 sending hugs and commiseration
@ShaulaEvans nooooooooo! 😧
@ShaulaEvans I told my 17 year old that they probably don't understand how different our experience is of the internet, I was like "I probably watch 5 minutes or less of video content every day" and they were completely stunned. Like "so what do you do then? Are you just (long pause) READING?!???"
@ShaulaEvans
This absolutely drives me nuts. Everything is a video now. Say my microwave won’t start and it’s blinking some error code at me. Give me the 357-page user manual and in a minute I can find the page that tells me what I need to do. Make me watch a 30-minute video of some guy making exaggerated facial expressions and telling me to like and subscribe, and… screw it—I can eat leftovers cold.
@mcmullin @ShaulaEvans "Mastodon user dies of ptomaine poisoning due to useless video"
@mcmullin @ShaulaEvans Or an AI chatbot that's doesn't tell you anything you can't search for in a second in the FAQs.
@mcmullin @ShaulaEvans I'm working with a HP Latex R1000 printing machine and they actually did it right there.
Everything you need to maintain on that thing is step by step illustrated like a comic with a text description and at the bottm end of the manual you find a video where somebody shows what you need to do but it's entirely optional.
@mcmullin @ShaulaEvans I've started adding "-site:YouTube.com" to all of my Google searches to exclude YouTube results.
@mcmullin @ShaulaEvans I've even come across videos of someone reading a manual, it's absurd.
@mcmullin @ShaulaEvans in such circumstances I just use the transcript, you can usually find the meat of the issue within seconds. There's no real need to watch some bloke's face talking.

@ShaulaEvans
I said similar yesterday when my kid asked me to find something about a problem he was having in a game. 30 minute video that seems to match what we needed, but the answer is hiding somewhere in those 30 minutes. Definitely not at the start, definitely not the end or at a labeled chapter mark...

Sometimes the first couple comments will give the answer without giving the "creator" no views, at least
