It's good to see DuckDuckGo getting some traction for my site referrals, though still pales in comparison to Google.

@geerlingguy

Great stuff. I've been having #DuckDuckGo as default everywhere for over a year now and very happier.

@geerlingguy Looking at the my self-hosted Umami Analytics that I have for my two main sites in the past 30 days:

Wait Wait Stats Page / Personal Website

Google: 81 % / 75 %
DuckDuckGo: 8 % / 15 %
Bing: 4% / 4 %

There is a smattering of Kagi, Yahoo, Ecosia and the browser that's unfortunately bundled with Zorin OS now.

@geerlingguy
I have been using SearXNG for the last few months. I wonder how that shows up.
@geerlingguy
And they let me turn off all of the "Ai" stuff!
@geerlingguy uh nice, I'm not the only ecosia user in your community :)
@geerlingguy is there a way of verifying the Google hits are human? I'd wager the DuckDuckGo are a higher percentage human hits while a sub decimal number of Google searches are human. Speculation of course, but I find my sites have very low engagement and origin of referral isn't an indicator of humanity.
@geerlingguy People don't block/overwrite referrers anymore? I though that especially on more technical sites this was common.
@pbeccard they do sometimes, so this is just the people who aren't blocking it. But I also self host analytics, and that leads to fewer people also blocking my tiny non-cookie tracking domain.
@geerlingguy I'm curious. How could your own analytics catch something like https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/smart-referer/ (yes, the Addon has not been maintained in years) which sends the URL of the page loaded as the HTTP referer?

@pbeccard if it's checking on jeffgeerling.com, I self host Fathom on midwesternmac.com, so not sure if that would catch it or not.

Someday I'll move to a different analytics tool though. Always no cookies.

@geerlingguy I would expect Youtube to bring much more traffic to your blog since you link to it everywhere and mention it in videos.
@hisold very few people click on the description. Vanishingly few these days, as YouTube keeps de-emphasizing that in favor of more recommendations and AI overviews.
@geerlingguy does browser address bar completion count toward whatever standard search engine the user has configured? is it possible to visit your site without a referral? can I visit directly?
