i just

extracted someone's exact address

from a dick pic

they sent me

incredible stuff happening today

@alina thats hilarious actually
Why would they do that (the address part. The pick itself is probably "being a douche")

@4censord it was consensual ^^

just think it's extremely funny this is possible lmao

@Ivikiwi2 @4censord exif data

phone cameras store your geolocation in images' metadata

@alina @4censord doesn't that get removed if you send it? 🥺
@Ivikiwi2 @4censord not over matrix sadly
@alina @Ivikiwi2 oh for matrix its even worse, some clients do some don't
And the server can't do it at least with encrypted chats
(Same as signal actually. But all clients there did have at least some security review)

@4censord @Ivikiwi2 tbh i dont strip my exif data for everything, instead i'm just careful where i share those images

but i like seeing all of my adventures on immich's map :)

@Ivikiwi2 @alina sometimes yep
Not everything does so though
@Ivikiwi2 @alina (and in some cases it would be bad if it did so)
@Ivikiwi2 @alina e.g. if I wanna put my images into some kind of library management program
Then if it removed all metadata I can't sort by that anymore for example

nyastodon
@alina @Ivikiwi2 wait what there is a dot basically where iam what?
@alina @Ivikiwi2 (the top of the black forest next to the swiss border)
@alina @Ivikiwi2 @4censord this is why i scrub exif before i send images :^3

@alina @Ivikiwi2 and its one of the first recommendations to turn that of /strip them out for anything.

E.g. mastodon or signal strip these out so you dont doxx yourself on accident

@4censord @alina just assumed any social media would do just for compression sake?
@Ivikiwi2 @alina compression isnt a factor here, compared to the image data the metadata is tiny.
But its good practice to do so to protect your users.

@4censord @alina in my mind they squeeze everything that's why they need leetcoders

But ig that wrong look at the Ai nonsense 💀

@Ivikiwi2 @alina I mean, many do compress images to save in storage and bandwidth
But that is unrelated to the metadata

@4censord @alina how many images do they store? This gotta add up?

Or they sneakily collect It
That would be smarter huh

@alina @Ivikiwi2 @4censord Some people have bad memory and so write their phone number or address where they are sure not to loose it. Just in case, you know.
I don't know about exif but a regular pen will do.
@alina oh
Then have fun I guess?
Tell them to strip exif data next time
@4censord @alina exif Tag probably.

Smartphones love to add gps coordinates in exif nowadays.
@kura @4censord exif not exit lol
@alina @4censord I know. That was auto correct , that I didn't pay attention to. I hope you received the edit notification (that I sent before I received your answer )

@alina Presuming that it was an unprompted, non-censensual dick pic, sorry that happened to you 😖

That aside, that's pretty incredible that you were able to do that!

@SleepyCatten nope it was consensual

@alina In that case, yay for consent 🥰

Regardless, pretty damn impressive tech sluthing Alina 🩷🫶

@alina That is one of the classical blunders.

Scrub your images of data, folks. At least if one does not want to be found that easily...
@alina Remind me not to share any photos with my dad's friend Richard.
@alina coordinates in the exif?
@nachtpfoetchen yup, not stripped because element-desktop is having a skill issue
