Mass demonstration shows people that the solidarity for action exists, but it doesn't change anything. Strikes can hurt illegitimate governments, though.

A general national strike in Germany ground the economy to a halt within a couple days and stopped the Kapp Putsch--what started out as a ridiculously successful military coup in Berlin in March of 1920. The strike didn't defeat fascism, obviously, but it did delay the fascist takeover by a decade.

(Hitler got off a plane outside Berlin only to be surrounded by striking workers and had to flee in disguise, and when he finally reached the city, he discovered the coup had already failed.)
