Personal milestone:
I gave a talk at #WordCampCanada, first time doing such a thing!
I had a fear of public speaking, and decided to lean into it, and everything turned out alright.

I spoke about #WordPress and #ActivityPub and had some great questions from a very engaged crowd.

I especially appreciated getting to discuss with @obenland and @evan about the ecosystem and which parts could use some refinements.

All in all it’s left me wanting to continue contributing to the convergence of the ecosystems.

I included a link to this page in my slides which is setup for one-time donations https://sponsormewp.com/u/django-doucet/

In the next few days I’ll be publishing a link to my own site where I’ll enable some monthly support options.

My short-medium term plan is to get my ActivityPub API client to a public beta.

There are still some vagueries and implementation differences to work around, but the recently started SWICG ActivityPub API task force (which I’m also contributing to) should clarify things for implementors 💪

There are so many neat things to build.

Like on-boarding for WP after activating the plugin has the same issue as any single user instance.

While relays are valid thing, sending posts to your sharedInbox, they don’t help finding people who care about similar topics.

I previously wrote about my vision for privacy respecting/ opt-in starter packs:

I even offered to build it.

I’m still open to it, if anyone wants to sponsor that specifically!

Privacy respecting Starter packs for the Fediverse. You want to create a starter pack? Here is the general design: Sign in via oauth (mastodon api), this will provision your acct. as moderator for the starter packs you create. A privacy respecting starter pack is just a bot actor. By following the actor/pack you opt-in to be listed. Want to opt out? Unfollow the actor/pack.

On the flight home I came up with a slightly different model, less like a starter pack or topical list, and more of a profile suggestion discovery engine.

There are other trust and safety mechanics but the main point is using a profiles current featuredTags and sorting suggestions by number of matches between users.

That sounds like XFN. Why not use it? It’s already there. The Link Manager (blogroll back end) used it extensively. (I think Link Manager is still in core but disabled.)
@dan_kn good point, I’ll look into it!
@django @obenland @evan I really enjoyed your talk! It was great to meet you IRL and hear about all the awesome things!

Likewise @chad it was great to meet in person, and hear about how mstdn.ca got started and operates!

I would be down for some sort of local Activity in the Pub style meetups!
