An excellent early album from the underrated Bob Degen. Why didn't he ever record anything for ECM? In my opinion, he fits their aesthetic perfectly. Interestingly, on this album, the bass is played by none other than Manfred Eicher himself! Additionally, it's worth noting that the liner notes are authored by Florian Fricke, in which he tries to interpret the phenomenon of free jazz.

@BM24 this is a great find. bob degen still lives in frankfurt. I saw him perform last year. he is really one of the great northern american pianists like paul bley - but chose to reside here (a bit like keith jarrett's brother chris jarrett). away from bigger fame and press. but then, if you start to listen to him it becomes evident, that he is a pioneer. still, frankfurt had one of europe's mist vivid jazz scenes (1945-1990). and bob did a lot for that.
@jojena "Sequoia Songs" is one of the best jazz piano albums from the 1970s, and it's hard to even find a single review of it online. I recently listened to "Piece for Mouth" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bpm53oL4cY) and was surprised once more that such good albums can remain unknown (maybe it's just my local perspective, but even here, some information about interesting things does occasionally surface). And of course, it turned out that Degen appears on it on the piano...

@BM24 oh thanks for mentioning. you know, when bertram and I played in darmstadt, wuchners wife (very nice person) also attended the concert. he just recently passed and I wanted to listen to more of his music, so this is a perfect starting point.
@jojena Oh, that synchronicity... I had mostly associated him with Hans Koller’s albums, such as "For Marcel Duchamp" and "The Horses!", both of which are highly recommended.
