Firstly I've written up the status of the u3a.social idea here u3acommunities.org/u3a-social-… ... this pages allows comments so feel free to add any thoughts.

But now I've fired up test site at friendica.u3a.social and I've started to explore its configuration and how it might suit us best. I would normally start with some sort of requirements, but its useful to have a tinker to understand the tool better.

The site is federating (eg u3acommunity meetings appear in the calendar) and I've fixed email so that join notifications should now work.

Assume all data on this test site will be deleted once testing has finished.

I think my main question at the moment is to how best make use of groups. I was hoping we could setup friendica groups for specific u3a groups, but also have regional and subject orientated groups. So something like :

* all of u3acommunities
* u3acommunities computing group only
* u3acommunities history group only
* wokingham region
* wokingham science group only
* home automation
* knitting
....

but I'm not quite seeing how this can be achieved. I've not found a good guide on how group structure can be designed.

For some of these groups it might be useful to follow some feeds .... eg @u3acommunities.org or #u3a so that users can join the group and get useful relevant streams.

Any thoughts or experiences ?

Note that I've got limited free time over the next few weeks but I'll tinker when I can. I can grant admin access to this test site if anyone wants to explore.

Pete

u3a.social update – U3A Communities

@khleedril @annehole @caww @u3acommunities.org @JohnAaronRose @admin @jpkatlarge A couple of questions:

1. In your first message, you say, "I'm not quite seeing how this can be achieved". What difficulties do you envisage? (I also wondered if using tags might solve those issues.)

2. Are you suggesting we need to have a particular structure in mind? Or could we just let it evolve organically?

@u3acommunities.org @crotchety @jpkatlarge @JohnAaronRose @caww @khleedril @annehole I'm really trying to explore how the friendia features might be used.

For example, I thought we could use friendica to mirror u3a structures ... perhaps

* wokingham [ organization ]
* - Science group [ within the wokingham organization ]
* u3acommunities [ organization ]
* - Science group [ within the u3acommunities organization ]

but groups are flat ... you don't seem to be able to create groups within groups. So an account like @ science @ wokingham.u3a.social would be a seperate server.

So for discussion groups, I believe they just need to be unique but with some sort of naming convention, perhaps :

* wokingham science group ( @ science-wokingham @ u3a.social )
* u3acommunities science group ( @ science-u3acommunities @ u3a.social )

Any user could follow these groups to join in (from any server). More specific than hash tags I feel.

Channels could be used to filter groups, so for example the science channel might consist of all science-* groups.

So, given we can only have a flat structure, I'm thinking we probabally need a naming convention.

@u3acommunities.org @crotchety @jpkatlarge @JohnAaronRose @caww @khleedril @annehole Once challenge I have is that request to join (follow) a group only raises a notification in the browser, so no email alert for example. So easy to miss requested if I don't happen to be logged in.
