Earlier today, I was trying to submit a potential phishing URL to Hybrid Analysis (hybrid-analysis[.]com/, behind CloudFlare) because I was too lazy to spin up a VM.
I wrote in the comments field that it was "Associated with" and then a bitly link which redirected to it.
I was unable to submit it with that comment because it gave me the error "This field contains improper words".
Because "Associated" contains "ass"...

Sorry if you are submitting a website related to Sussex (since it contains sex), Clitheroe (because it contains clit), or Dick's Sporting Goods (do I have to explain).
The latter of which is not an unlikely target of phishing, but no, you can't submit a comment about it.
Also, fun fact: you can not use the contact form without logging in.

Potential fixes:

  • say what words/characters matched the filter
  • only match swear words when they have spaces or punctuation on both sides (doesn't fix Dick's Sporting Goods but does fix associated)
  • add exclusions (such as exclusion list would be difficult to maintain and very pointless)
  • use next generation AI powered machine learning-based intelligent AI
  • just don't filter for swear words
  • just remove the comment feature entirely so you don't have to deal with this problem
  • just shutdown the entire website so you don't have to deal with annoying people complaining on social media
  • sue the annoying people on social media
  • change the English language so normal words can't contain swear words
  • blame the intern
