For alternatives to gain anything but a tiny following, the software behind them also must be easy. That requires a chunk of work, but it is achievable by a small team. @Chapz anyone can just legally make an MP3 file. Or if you have CDs, it is legal to make MP3 copies for personal use. Or if you purchased MP3s from the artist, or from iTunes, Bandcamp, etc.
