While having a conversation with @hornblower I realized something about charging electric cars [in the US].

Fast chargers make a profit not by selling energy, but by selling time. I can plug an electric car into any outlet. We plugged our car once into a building outlet in the middle of nowhere using an extension cord. It was fine. But it takes a Long Time, and in the current word, time is expensive. If you are pressed for time, you'll pay outrageous fees for the electricity.

That time we charged into a random outlet in the middle of nowhere?

We were very stressed. We learned the hard way that neither fast chargers not batteries work well in the heat. But once we crossed the mental hurdle of "we need to charge at a charger" things got a bit easier.

After running the extension cord, we sat at a picnic bench and watched the desert sunset. It was slow. And beautiful.

We never did that again. But I learned that the possibility is out there.
