Log 🪵@raindrops_and_roses Because proof of work cryptocurrency and large model AI are implicitly designed to burn more power than we can generate, so the dirtiest fuels we have can be pulled out of mothballs and sold. The more we turn to clean renewables, the more uselessly power-inefficient the next project has to be to make the coal mining stocks profitable again.
Trivia Posing As A Human@raindrops_and_roses there are ideas to do that but mostly state regulations don't allow it. You could run a data center cheaper than the grid power in Nevada for 99% of the year off grid with batteries and solar. You can get pretty high with solar and wind other places but again if big energy users abandon the grid it might cause a cascade of people leaving the grid forcing the cost I've running the grid onto fewer and fewer people.
@jeff61813 I'm sure these people have enough land and sway to make it change if they wanted to. As we've seen recently everything is money and power.
@raindrops_and_roses right now Big Data centers and utilities are mainly allowing more flexibility, like agreeing to disconnect from the grid when demand is at its highest and rely on backup batteries or generators during that time. In most circumstances, that would be the hottest day of the year when most people are using their air conditioners right when everyone comes home from work.
