Former Portioner's cottage, dating from 1690, in Carmunnock in Glasgow. A portioner farmed a portion of land that was allotted to them by the local land owner. The roof would originally have been thatched, and remained so until around 1900.

@thisismyglasgow What an amazing slope to build a house on. There must have been a good reason for it. Perhaps to make use of a part of the land that it would be difficult to farm?
@bodhipaksa That's what I was imagining. Put the people on the unproductive land, not matter how inconvenient it is to them.

@lopta Good question. I'd imagine reeds, but I don't know for sure.
