It's FOSS News
@itsfoss Wait, what?! What happend?? Why?!
@itsfoss Oh, okay. I thought it was intentional and was afraid that the most popular free software distribution had gone all out to take away freedom. But after reading the article, I know it's a mistake πŸ˜…
@ppaluchowski64 @itsfoss Freedom in Ubuntu? Lol
@klme @itsfoss I didn't say that. I used the phrase "the free software distribution", which was intended to mean a distribution consisting of free software, but not necessarily providing complete freedom.
@ppaluchowski64 @itsfoss Ubuntu is not included in the Free Software list.
@klme @itsfoss You're not listening. I didn't say Ubuntu is free software, because it isn't. However, it does consist of it. Components such as the kernel (linux), shell (bash), libraries like glibc, libstdc++, libssl, etc. are free software that are part of Ubuntu. Remember that a distribution is a collection of both free and non-free software. Adding non-free components to a distribution that already has free components doesn't suddenly make them non-free.
@ppaluchowski64 @itsfoss Free Software is a specific term defined by the FSF and GNU. Software either meets the criteria or it does not. Ubuntu does not meet the Free Software criteria.
@klme @itsfoss Please note that I have never written that Ubuntu is free software, but that free software is part of Ubuntu, which is why I used the term "the free software distribution".
@ppaluchowski64 @itsfoss I repeat, Ubuntu is not a Free Software distribution.
@klme @itsfoss It depends on how you define free software distribution. There are different definitions. I don't want to delve into which one should be used, as that's a personal matter. However, throughout this discussion, I simply wanted to explain why I used this term. And for clarity, I'll answer it again - it was intended to mean a distribution consisting of free software. I hope you understand now. I used the term, you commented, I explained what I meant, and I hope the thread has been resolved πŸ™‚
@ppaluchowski64 @itsfoss The definition of Free Software is provided by the FSF, which is in turn legally enforced through licenses. Other definitions have no legal basis, so there is no point in using them.
