By now you know that Microsoft is now defaulting to saving new Word documents directly to OneDrive. I guess Excel will be the next inline. The cynical take is that this is incredibly convenient for them, especially if they plan on using that data to train future LLMs. Imagine paying for software only to have your data automatically funneled into their cloud. Plus, what happens when you're offline and need those files? Just use the LibreOffice and just say no to all Microsoft products.
@nixCraft There has to be a way to turn off this default. Otherwise I won't be able to use Microsoft products to process data governed by GDPR. Which, yes, I do routinely do at home. Because the risk of accidentally saving to an American cloud will simply be too great.

"By default, the save location is directly to the OneDrive cloud.
If you want to change this default save location, go to Word, File > Options > Save.
Uncheck the box "AutoSave files stored in the cloud by default in word".
Then check "Save to computer by default" and then define the local file location.'
@RealGene @nixCraft I still can't see how to return to the previous default Save option - it now takes several clicks to get to "Browse" where you can actually select the destination folder.
@RealGene @nixCraft I don't see how that relates.
@TimWardCam @nixCraft
This permits changing the default location for "Documents", "Pictures", etc.
So applications that use those hierarchies will by default open/store from them.
E.g. Paint will default to Pictures, Word will default to Documents, and you have specified exactly where those reside.

@RealGene @nixCraft Yes, the problem is that I keep different documents IN DIFFERENT DIRECTORIES, and have done since last century. By default when saving a new document for the first time I want it to display the directory tree, what is now called the "Browse" option, so that I can choose THE RIGHT DIRECTORY FOR THIS PARTICULAR DOCUMENT with one click.

It's still possible to get to that option, but it's more mouse clicks than it used to be and I can't see how to make it the default again.

@TimWardCam @nixCraft
Ah. Well then, you're straight out of luck.
The Dark Pattern of burying the utility of "Save as" under "Browse" is Microsoft's equivalent of making rats press a lever to get cocaine…
