if you're wondering why the sudden influx of users,
@ancient_catbus ohh let me guess. They're doing llm based moderation
@naturepoker
yes they rely on "the algorithm" with like four actual human moderators lol
@ancient_catbus i wish Erin biba would come to mastodon! I miss her from Twitter
@CosmicTraveler the way this is going she just might
@ancient_catbus Reminds me of all the times Twitter's pulled shit like this. :/
@ancient_catbus One of the nice things about Mastodon: you can find an instance that agrees with your politics.

@LukefromDC @ancient_catbus You can in BlueSky too...there just aren't many yet.

I've been telling everyone to migrate to BlackSky or NorthSky all week.

@LukefromDC the problem with that is they regularly collapse and vanish, or irritate the Star Chamber and get defederated

I'm on my 4th instance and if jorts ever goes away, that's it

@ancient_catbus turns out the platform created by right wing tech bros was not a good alternative to twitter, who knew
@ancient_catbus
fun fact it's better to avoid useless newlines in alt text

@ancient_catbus it's almost like a centralized group of individuals are motivated by being in the 'good graces' of some for profit?

Who would've thought 🤷‍♂️

@gildilinie @ancient_catbus Knew Bluesky should've implemented some fucking DEI.

Being a PBC carried so much potential that all just went to waste.

Standardizing social media with a focus on social justice, on a larger mass-media scale, would've been serious praxis.
@jonny ✨decentralization✨
@glyph @jonny So if I understand correctly the promise Bluesky offers around resistance to enshittification, this would be the moment where we can switch to an instance operated by someone with decent ethics while keeping our followers, followees and tweet history right ?
Aveta👾🇭🇹 (@aliafonzy.blacksky.app)

Migrate to BlackSky instructions: 1. tektite.cc, disable 2FA 2. Login w/ real pw NOT app pw 3. Click migrate to blacksky button 4. Add handle, new pw, use dropdown if non-Black user 5. Click Migrate 6. When done transferring, enter code sent to your email 7. Complete! blacksky.community is site

Bluesky Social
@jonny @ewjoachim there is still a lot to be desired here but the promise *is* starting to manifest at the edges, and it's nice to see there's a practical deployment of this now. (Sort of. My understanding is that while this gets you off of *a lot* of bluesky infrastructure, your feet are still pretty well nailed to the floor by the ultimate did:plc: resolution service)
@glyph @jonny @ewjoachim sigh don't get us started on did:plc. it was the thing we flagged in our write-up like four years ago and... sigh
@ireneista @jonny @ewjoachim is your writeup public?
@glyph @jonny @ewjoachim no, and as of 2025 there's been really rapid development such that we think it would no longer be a good idea to publish it, it's finally outdated.... except in that respect

@ireneista @glyph @jonny @ewjoachim not only the did:plc stuff, although that's obviously an issue. It's not quite decentralised yet, dk if it'll be even as decentralised as mastodon, although technically it could be more judging by their content hash and signature based protocol. Anyway, here are afew links about this stuff. First, a quite recent fedi thread:
https://mastodon.social/@mcc/115204933163360398
Then, stuff like this:
https://www.mediaactivist.com/bluesky-vision/

There could be good things coming out of this, but I wouldn't really hold my breath. Tbh, I wish the fedi would become better, both from a software and social point of view, aka the racism problems and much more, so we wouldn't have to keep hopping from incompatible protocol to crypto or billionaire owned incompatible protocol forever, thinking that for sure, it'll be better this time round.

Bluesky Vision

Psst, can you get me an invite code? Everyone wants to be part of the Next Big Thing that's just like the last one. That may not bode well.

MediaActivist.com
@esoteric_programmer @glyph @jonny @ewjoachim yes, mcc's investigations in particular have been quite useful to us
@ancient_catbus I think people underestimate the value of being in a relatively small community where you can be pretty sure the people who have veto control over your speech share your values

@ancient_catbus Are they allowed to say "fuck this I'm moving to the fedi?"

I mean I've got an account there so I can follow (checks) 19 people who aren't here, and so I can push out promotion when the time comes, but my profile says "Conversations on Mastodon."

I just fail to see how rational people can't see that any corporate platform is prone to enshittification, almost by definition.

@ancient_catbus Examples? Is that possible?
@worik examples of what
@ancient_catbus Moderation failures. I am not on Bluesky (life is too short) so cannot see.
@worik this was several weeks ago and I'm not in the business of providing free research for randos
