I’ll admit something uncomfortable: I’ve never had an original idea.

Every essay I’ve posted, every word I’ve written, every argument I’ve ever made - they all have their ancestors. Sometimes I know them, sometimes I don’t.

I'm okay with that.

Originality is a Scam

Westenberg.
@Daojoan Yup. And thinking they have to do something original prevents too many people from doing anything at all.

@Daojoan

Nobody can have an original idea. That's from a Tavistock Institute experiment, I think. Originality is something I've never really had to begin with. However, like my producer, Neigsendoig, we can find creative ways to do something, but that doesn't mean they're original.

@Daojoan Every time someone says something along these lines I get reminded of the "Everything is a Remix" film, which first woke me up to this.
@Daojoan that was great. Many thanks Joan.
This line was key for me: "It’s the willingness to risk being derivative, cliché, even embarrassing  -  and to publish anyway."
