I think that Silksong's existence shows pretty conclusively that the idea that people need to struggle against not having their basic needs met in order to be sufficiently 'motivated' to contribute to society is bullshit.

Hollow Knight gave the members of Team Cherry generational-wealth levels of resources. They had no need to release another game in order to keep food on the table - they did so because they chose to, and they took their time around doing it, and by and large people are extraordinarily happy with the results.

The whole concept that people "need" to be threatened with starvation and homelessness to "keep them motivated" - something I've seen seriously argued many times in the past - is a traumatic narrative that the actual evidence (look at every single study on unconditional basic income!) counters.

@munin I hadn't thought of Silksong as an argument for UBI but I'm here for it.

@heretohinder

the various studies are all very dry "this puts money into the economy" - an abstract metric without a clear personal story to hook into.

"happy people who don't have to panic about food produce this thing you are currently enjoying and wouldn't you like more of that" is a much more compelling narrative.

@munin @heretohinder Even aside from #UBI people in places that have actual #SocialSecurity, #LivingWages as #MinimumWage and #PTO as well as #ParentalLeave are more happy even if the number on their paycheck is lower (even after adjusting for purchasing power, taxes, benefits, currency conversion, etc.)…

  • Why else do people move from the #USA to #Germany and accept 50-75% less income?

Maybe it's because #money isn't what drives them!
