"Robert Reich says that Disney wants us to believe it sat down and had a sweet, little reasonable confab with Jimmy Kimmel, and that's why Disney has brought him back.

As Robert Reich says, this is bulltwat.

Here's what happened:

"Shortly after Kimmel’s suspension was announced, Disney stock dipped about 3.5 percent and continued to trade lower in subsequent days."

The real reason Disney restored Kimmel’s late-night show

"That loss in market value has amounted to about $4 billion.

Investors knew consumers were upset. There’s never one single reason for the ups and downs in the value of a particular firm’s shares of stock, but the correlation here has been almost exact.

The bottom line: We have extraordinary power. We’re the vast majority. Like every other big corporation, Disney relies on us."

"Even if we can’t count on our elected politicians to protect our First Amendment rights, we can rely on ourselves. When our outrage translates into withholding our consumer dollars, a big corporation like Disney is forced to listen — and respond.

Remember this."

"In Strength in Numbers, G. Elliott Morris noted that as measured by internet searches for 'Cancel Disney+,'' the boycott against Disney, the parent company of ABC, is now four times as large as any similar search of a boycott over the past five years."

"Let’s be clear: Kimmel’s return is a victory for the resistance in its defense of the Constitution.

The victory teaches us a powerful lesson that we must internalize and replicate at every opportunity: Together, there is nothing we cannot do."

"If ABC’s executives thought that their decision to capitulate to Trump by canceling Jimmy Kimmel’s program would pass quietly by, they’re being taught a quick lesson to the contrary. A massive movement to boycott the company and its properties has emerged, including at the hands of actors who themselves star in Disney properties."

"We were a bigger threat than the Trump Regime. Early on, it was clear to me that we were a bigger headache to Disney than Trump, Sinclair, and Nextar. The volume of Disney+ and Hulu cancellations, before anyone could organize a formal boycott, was staggering."

"All of this came at a price for Disney. The company’s stock price tanked losing more than $3.8 billion in market value in just the two days after the announcement. The message was clear: 'Consumers were exercising their own First Amendment rights and ending their subscriptions to the company’s streaming services,' as Susan Campbell, a media studies professor at the University of New Haven in Connecticut told Reuters."

@wdlindsy I am a little surprised #Target hasn’t backtracked and reintroduced DEI initiatives. There’s good evidence that their sales are down because of it, but maybe not as dramatic as a Disney boycott.

@cs Yes, a good point. I've read commentary by African-American commentators, in particular, about how the Black community has been very intent in boycotting Target and has made real inroads with its boycott.

@wdlindsy

I suppose balancing the threats of losing their licence vs losing their customers.

@wdlindsy To be fair, Disney was uniquely vulnerable here by having all those services requiring a subscription, that one can unsubscribe from. With an over-the-air broadcaster, it would be harder. They broadcast their programming for free with embedded advertising, and of course one can just stop watching them - or then, one can make a list of their advertisers and boycott those. That is serious work, does not produce a sweet unsubscribe screen shot to post online, and does not deposit a single number directly onto the CEO's desk...
@martinvermeer I have to admit I'm not inclined to bend over backwards to be fair to Disney. My sense is they have not earned fairness.
@wdlindsy Ah, that's a misreading. The call for fairness is to people that compare the success of this popular revolt against Disney to the many other situations where a similar revolt would be well warranted, but much harder to pull off. Disney offered a convenient handle for this that others sadly don't. E.g., you cannot unsubscribe from ICE.

@wdlindsy Don't just remember it, but remember the tradition. The Montgomery bus boycott. The anti-apartheid campaign. And today, the BDS campaign. Money, used in this way, is speech, and has always been.
