This is written for the UK, but the same can be said of New Zealand. For all the talk of will NZ recognise a Palestinian state or not at the UN General Assembly meeting, recognition alone is essentially meaningless amidst an ongoing genocide. Concrete actions are needed, like:

- Passing Chloë’s Palestine Sanctions Bill to enact sanctions on Israel
- Joining South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice, along with Belgium, Ireland, Spain, Chile, and others
- Expel the Israeli ambassador and recall NZ’s diplomatic mission
- Enact economic sanctions on the $16M of exports and $178M of imports

Will New Zealand take these measures?

Sadly, it’s not likely. Our government is more afraid of US economic backlash in the form of tariffs than taking a stand for what’s morally required. Next year we have the chance to elect a government with a spine

UK: Why recognising a Palestinian state is not enough

If Starmer thinks he has bought himself some breathing space on Palestine, he should think again. Only ending the genocide and impactful sanctions on Israel will do
