When the charade of bike infrastructure tells on itself because the signage doesn't even fit in the designated space, which disappears entirely at the slightest inconvenience or whim of traffic engineers.

@redrummy yikes!

Our most recent “improvement” includes this gem, which I can’t think of as anything other than Hostile To Cyclists.

#hostileinfrastructure

@grammasaurus Let's play Limbo! But in the other dimension.

@redrummy ugh

In our case it’s doubly disappointing because we made a big push for bike lanes on that road. We measured, studied, measured again, and then….they did this.

#middlefinger

@grammasaurus Yup. The Vogons at DOT made a big deal about a "continuous bike lane" on the main road closest to my house which is anything but. Neverminding the fact it's a gravel gutter most of the year, it disappears a couple times and does fun things like jump the exit-only lane for cars in the shadow of an overpass with no instructions to either party. Safe!

@redrummy Sigh.

All we can do is keep trying.
And try to not get discouraged!

@grammasaurus I've been to so many road projects and open houses, and written so many comments. I've actually had some successes at the municipal level that gave me hope and motivation. But DOT? Vogons.

@redrummy unfortunately, here in NY it’s hard to tell where state DOT ends and municipal highway dept begins. I think there’s some overlap (?)

I can’t help but think that if they’d talk to actual experts (the Dutch perhaps?) they could save all of us a lot of time, money, and agony.

But the political will has to be there, and it just isn’t

@grammasaurus 💯 My hometown Anchorage AK has a balkanized mix of DOT & Muni roads and sidewalks. In winter it's so frustrating how often reports of uncleared or buried sidewalks are met with, "That's not us, it's them", like we're supposed to have the map memorized. Strangely, the roads are cleared much more reliably than the sidewalks. 🤷‍♂️

@redrummy Oh yeah, sidewalks are a whole nother universe! In 3 places I’ve lived, the city builds them but residents must clear them of snow as well as maintain them!

BTW—I love your comment about “having the map memorized”.

#lifeslittlemysteries

@grammasaurus And yeah, you know and I know that shit happens ALL the time.
