I'm "tooting" from Ctrl+Alt+F3 land. "The world is quiet here," as Lemony Snicket used to say. I've tried out newsboat as a CLI RSS reader, I thought that worked well. I also found 'apt install gopher' will install the official gopher client.

@nantucketlit

I keep tooting "The world is quiet here." whenever I launch a new instance and am the only one there, but no one has gotten the reference so far, as far as I can tell. :P

@amin @nantucketlit New instance of ... ? Why the only one?

@darritt @nantucketlit

Heh, I currently host four GoToSocial instances. 😂

@amin @nantucketlit Oh! Why so many? I noticed a ton of GTS instance started showing up in the Streams directory. Wondered what was up with that. GTS looks nice ...

@darritt @nantucketlit

My first instance, which I used just to try out the software, was https://gts.verboseguacamole.com but I've long since taken that down.

Polymaths Alpha - GoToSocial

A preliminary instance for Polymaths.social.

GoToSocial is so lightweight to host, too. I've got all four of those running on the same machine as each other and as all the other things I host, including my search engine.

@amin @nantucketlit @clew I'd read it was lightweight. But you can't do everything most apps do, or am I getting confused?

@darritt @nantucketlit @clew

It's gotten far more feature complete even since I started hosting it. Back then, it didn't even have hashtags. Now it has complete support for hashtags, edits, and a number of features even Mastodon doesn't.

There are still a few things on the roadmap but overall it does very nicely, and I think all the ~30 active users I have on my instance enjoy it more than the Mastodon accounts they've previously had.

@amin @nantucketlit @clew That's cool. I like the simplicity of it.

@darritt @nantucketlit @clew

I first set it up in 15 minutes. Dead simple. :)

@amin @darritt @nantucketlit @clew Out of curiosity, of those 15 minutes, how many of it was waiting for the download / docker pull to finish, without realizing it already did?

Asking for a friend1.

  • Don't look at me like that!2 â†Šī¸Ž

  • FINE!3 â†Šī¸Ž

  • It's me. I spent 10+ minutes waiting, not noticing it finished compiling faster than a Masto docker pull. â†Šī¸Ž

  • @algernon @darritt @nantucketlit @clew

    Um, none. I just used wget to download the binary. XD

    I used this guide from Uberspace which went really simply: https://lab.uberspace.de/guide_gotosocial/
