I wonder if the seaweed can be soaked, and then the salt water used for other purposes (perhaps boiled down to produce natural sea salt)?

How to Use Seaweed to Mulch Your Garden

Seaweed will benefit your garden any time of year, but it is especially useful as a mulch to protect plants during hot, dry weather. In our garden, we’ve come to rely on seaweed as a valuable, yet free, source of fertilizer, mulch and organic pest control all in one natural material.

Excerpt: "But what about salt? Is this a problem?

"We have been using seaweed as mulch for many years and have not seen any adverse effect, such as a salt overload in the soil. In our region we have plentiful rain. If you are concerned about salt, seaweed can be spread out over the driveway and rinsed with a hose. Of course this is not an issue if you are using freshwater lake weed."

Eartheasy – Solutions for Sustainable Living

Ooooh...! It is possible to make sea salt from seaweed! Trying that out after my next beach excursion (assuming the ocean bacterial levels are low -- always check that first!)

How to Make Seaweed Salt
By Maria Finn

Excerpt: "Seaweed is a beautiful vegetable. Underwater it sways in the current and tossed onto beaches, it wraps into fractal patterns, telling the story of a storm. It’s also delicious and adds umami depth to your salt. Umami is that sixth taste sensation that triggers your pleasure endorphins. Seaweed is high in many vitamins and anti-oxidants and rich in magnesium, calcium and iron. It also naturally contains iodine, so if you make seaweed salt, you are set.

"It’s easy to grab a handful of seaweed, and especially kelp when you are out on the water, or wade out during a very low tide and get it from the water or newly exposed rocks. If strands are on a bare beach, avoid these because insects are already decomposing it. When picking wild foods, never take more than a third of the leaves from each plant, seaweed included. Virtually all seaweed is edible, though some is more delicious than others. Or you can purchase seaweed at your local store.

"For seaweed salt, you’ll need about two small to four medium size strands of kelp, or the equivalent of other types for each gallon of water. Let the harvested sea water sit until sediment has settled to the bottom, then scoop out the water and run it through a cheesecloth to remove any debris.

"Pour your salt water into a pan, the flatter your pan is, the more quickly it will cook down. Boil on high for 2-3 hours."

@DoomsdaysCW I've been buying green salt from Mexico which is made from ground sea asparagus. It's delicious, lower in sodium, and has a bit of Umami!
Nice! I wondered about if the end product might have some green in it (which wouldn't bother me a bit). @jessetmccann
@jessetmccann @DoomsdaysCW I don't mean to be a smart ass, because this sounds yummy. I love seaweed snacks....but....how can salt be lower in sodium?

From what I've been learning about natural sea salt, it has more minerals and potassium content -- which gives flavor without as much sodium content (like one would see in commercial salt), @praetor . I suggest watching the TV series, #SaltFatAcidHeat -- the salt episode in particular -- where they talk about that with regards to traditionally-made Japanese sea salt!

@jessetmccann

@DoomsdaysCW @jessetmccann okay, so it's just a salt that has a lower NaCl content because it's mostly other things. So it's not _actually_ a salt, but I know a bunch of the chemists and they don't split hairs. Sounds delish either way.
@DoomsdaysCW I use large quantities of seaweed as a fertilising mulch and as a fertilising tea. I try to collect when we’ve had a storm and spring tide combo - so a big bank of weed at the top of the beach - followed by rain for a few days. If it’s warm weather even better because it will have started to breakdown. Pile it on thickly and top off with woodchip. Total is about a foot deep. Works very well
